No, it is not free. It is a proprietary protocol covered by patents and you need a license from Microsoft to use it. And Microsoft dictates conditions for it.
If you want to use free, open-sourced protocols, go for CalDAV and CardDAV. Kerio Connect (unlike Microsoft Exchange which you apparently admire) does support these protocols and let customer choose what to use and where. You are no longer bound to one particular client or device.
