Attended a webinar about hosting email with Kerio Connect. This was the first I had ever heard about the possibility of moving Kerio to the cloud. Not sure if it is a new thing. Apparently it is though some company known as Big Mountain Mail. The webinar didn't contain much info on how to administer our server if it is not on premise anymore. I was wondering if anyone else has done this and if they are happy with the result.

Looks like there are a few options out there for using a provider that hosts Kerio Connect - https://www.gfi.com/products-and-solutions/email-and-messagi ng-solutions/kerio-connect/specifications/kerio-connect-as-h osted-service#provider

Yes there are a couple of options for the Untied States. I got a quote from them and it would be a huge price jump from what we are currently paying. Not sure if it is worth it. I was just wondering if anyone else was using the service and what their experience with it might be.

We moved the Kerio Connect client hosting from our office to Big Mountain Mail and wish we would have done it years ago. We charge $ 10.00 per month for licensing, spam/malware filtering, backup and user maintenance. No more nightmares from local power outages, cut fiber from area construction or infrastructure refreshes.

Jon is great to work with and makes the migration process incredibly easy.

I've been comparing the Big Mountain Mail hosting option to Exchange 365. It used to be that going with Kerio Connect was the cheaper alternative to Exchange. I am not sure that is the case anymore. For example, Big Mountain Mail charges for users as well as data, whereas Exchange 365 only charges for users. Since we currently have 1.4 TB of data on our email server, .35 per gigabyte would mean an extra almost $500 a month. Maybe this option makes sense for smaller companies. But for us, might as well go with Exchange 365. It would be cheaper, and there is also an option to get Word, Excel, and Outlook included in our license.

Rusty, to answer your question about managing your server off-prem, it would be the same as it is now. You would still have the full Kerio Connect webadmin console you are already familiar with. We don't use a watered down API control panel. Additionally, since it is a managed service, we provide additional support to you or your end users should you need it. As far as cost and comparison to O365, since we are providing a managed service, you are going to get a level of support that you do not get with O365. You will have more control over your users and with a private server, you still have a private server with your own global settings, branding, etc. O365 is not going to give you a private server. So, if security is a concern then maybe a shared server solution isn't the best idea. Data cost can be a factor in some cases for some people. You state that you have 1.4 TB of data, but is that data + backup? We do not charge for backup, so the $0.35/GB rate you state is actually about half the cost since 1GB at $0.35 is actually getting you 1GB of data storage, plus approximagely 1GB of backup storage at no additional cost. Plus, we backup using Veeam providing granular file level recovery. O365 won't give you that. If you need to restore an account with them, they will want to restore the entire account. Not just a single folder or in the case of a private server, perhaps restore a config file, etc. Plus, if you are a reseller, you do get 15% discount from all of our hosting services. So, that $0.35, would actually be just under $0.30/GB. Last, you can continue to use your own licensing if you choose. If you do, we charge $2.50 per user, which covers the cost of the CPU, memory, bandwidth and other infrastructure. This is great if you are a partner with an existing SaaS license and wish to keep it to help with your partner level quotas. Or, if we provide the SaaS license, we charge $4 per user which then actually means you are getting the license for $1.50 per user, which is less than what you might be paying now. Either way, when compared to O365, we do not require an annual contract. So, if you have 30 users and purchase 30 O365 users, if you drop 10 users a few months from now, you are still paying for 30 users with O365 through your term. With us, when you drop down to 20 users or 15 users, etc. you are only paying for that many users during that month. The same is true for the storage usage. You can increase/decrease storage and that is what you will pay for that month. The servers gets audited at the end of each month prior to billing. There is a Veeam backup license fee we charge, but is per server... so whether you have 15 users or 500, the cost is $10 per month. We also offer more flexibility in payment. With O365, you are required to pay by card and setup autopay. With us, you can pay by check, card or ACH and if you pay by card you can choose to setup autopay or manually pay it during the month when it is convenient for you. The whole point about us is flexibility. You can continue to manage and support your customers just as you always have, but gain an additional helping hand for the same cost overall as what you'd pay with O365 and have no term contracts. Flexibility and real small town type support... something that seems to be lacking in the business world nowadays. But, that doesn't stop us from trying! Big Mountain acquired Kerio Cloud customers and servers almost two years ago. When we took over, we retained about 90% of their base and resolved the instability issues GFI created when they started using Amazon containers by moving everyone over to our VMware environment. We also aquired uSync out of Australia several years ago. Both of these existing customer bases were merged in with our existing base to become the largest Kerio Connect host in the United States and Australia. I would be happy to answer any direct questions you have. It certainly doesn't hurt to get a direct quote from me and depending on your data storage requirements, I may even discount the per GB rate based on volume. You can PM me here or send a message through our website to request a quote. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. Yes, 1.4 TB is just for our data and not for backup. Being able to access old email is something that is important to us. Every now and then a user needs me to find a very old email that they may have deleted, and I need to be able to provide it for them.

We are in the beginning stages of considering moving our email to the cloud. I'm just gathering info right now. I'll let you know if I have any further questions.

I should also mention that the 1.4 TB does include archive data. I currently save all incoming and outgoing mail in our archives. How does Big Mountain handle archiving? Would we be charged for this data. (Note I am not referring to backups. This is something separate).

Rusty, I replied to your email, but will also answer here for benefit of the group. Kerio Connect's built-in archiving would be considered regular mailstore storage. We do not store the archives on cheaper, degraded storage. You will get the same performance accessing archives as you would with your inbox. However, unless the zip files are expanded, it is all compressed, taking a fraction of storage as would the normal data. If you currently keep the built-in archives stored in a separate drive or volume, we would most likely migrate/import those into the same mailstore directory. Backups are performed on your whole server, to include archives. Those archives would be accessible to you just as they are now. The thing to keep in mind is our private servers really do provide you the same manageability as your in-house server. Yes, you get all the benefits of being in the cloud, but it is your server and all of your current settings, passwords, etc. are migrated over. We do offer external e-discovery archiving for a per-user fee that has unmeasured storage quotas, but it would archive moving forward and not include past email.
