Hi all,
I have a MacMini M1 server with the datastore on a Pegasus RAID through thunderbolt. Couple of things:
1. For some reason I still need to diagnose, when we had a local power cut last week even though the server, DAS and router are on UPS, that stayed up, the server and the DAS went into sleep.
2. When they came back on the server woke up faster than the DAS causing Kerio to default to the original local location for the datastore - meaning that mailboxes were now empty. Redirected to the correct datastore and managed to get everyone back on, but as some mailboxes are very large, there were some sync issues whilst the clients downloaded they excessive mailboxes again.
I did ask GFI about forcing Kerio to not look at the default local location, but its not possible as they don't recommend storing off the internal drives (is this new - I'm sure Kerio were ok with this before GFI..?)
Has anyone else had any ideas - I was thinking of maybe a symlink in the default to the DAS location..
Other than this one power interruption I've had zero issues with this setup over the last 4 years.

Situations like this are why the official Kerio doctrine is to not use external storage. I know that many do, successfully, but the official support line is "don't".
That said, I'd look first for a solution to the root cause: What made the M1 go to sleep when the UPS kicked in? Are they connected via USB or some other interface? Does the M1 have power settings that tell it to go to sleep after a few minutes on battery power? I have no practical experience with Macs, but equivalent settings can be found in Windows, so it stands to reason the the Mac (and Linux servers) have something similar.

I hate to make a 'me too' post but I use an external Pegasus and have found a couple times in the past that the internal Kerio mailstore folder was used after restarting instead of the Pegasus one.
Would really like to know of a way to fix this behavior.
In the meantime, I found that ensuring all the firmware and drivers on the Pegasus are up-to-date helped a lot to ensure the Pegasus started up in a timely manner with the computer.
If you have not done so check for M1-related updates for your Pegasus - I know some of our older Pegasus units are not usable with M1.

I used to have some mac mini's with Pegasus raid systems running Kerio. I created an extra volume on the Pegasus to install macOS on, and set this as the startup disk for the macs.
This way, the mac had to wait for the Pegasus raid to fully power on to be able to boot, because it contained the boot volume. On Kerio servers with less than 1TB of data I even setup the now non-used internal hard drive as a Time Machine backup drive.
Having everything (System volume and Data volume) on the Pegasus had the added advantage that, in the case of hardware failure on the mac mini, I could just connect the Pegasus to another Mac with thunderbolt and easily get the server up and running again.
However, this was some time ago, with 2010/2011 mac mini's. I'm not sure if current M1 Macs are able to boot from an external raid system.

@Backspin - that's an interesting idea - I'll see if I can find out if its possible with M1 Macs. I assume there were no speed issues with using the DAS as the boot up drive from an overall speed perspective?
@fishtech - I did ask GFI and they said there was no way to change this behaviour - which is slightly frustrating. If anything I suspect the symlink will be the answer.
