Which tiny connector do you mean and how to install it?

You can't. Kerio dropped (unwisely, IMHO) support for it several years ago. The on-line connector was just that -- meant to be used when on-line to the internet. Some customers wanted their mail available even when off-line (caching mode), so the Off-Line connector (KOFF) was developed. Apparently Kerio did not want to support both tools, so dropped the on-line connector. And Performance has suffered for it.

The online connector (without offline caching) is still listed under Kerio Connect Downloads (client tab).

Yes, but if you read the release notes, it does not support any version of Office newer than 2007. Maybe 2010; I'll admit to not checking it for a while now.

I had to change every hard drive to SSD in the company to get acceptable performance from Kerio Outlook Connector. Without an SSD, I had user machines locked at 100% disk usage for 10-15 minutes at a time. I guess that might be part of the problem of using a flat file system, which I believe Kerio uses.

Honestly, it's more Microsoft we would need to hit for that. Kerio (and any other no MS company) had to develop an addin or workaround to get outlook synced with the server. This is because MS keeps the connect mechanism for themself, so a pure exchange connection can't be used. Also Kerio removed the "Online" Client simply. because the newer Outlookversions didn't support it anymore inkluding an offline mode. That's why they had to do something like that.

Kerio basically creates a local cache DB file and dl's the mailheaders etc. Icewarp does the same. Or Zafara. Everyone implements it a bit different, but yeah ... sucks.

Btw. you can add a registry key (GPO! Very Happy) to change the cache dir off kerio. I did that on my terminalserver and everyone had their cache under d:\kerio\%Username% (on a SSD). Speed was actually great, even with 30 ppl accessing like 20k mails per account. Only slow thing was if you changed to the calendar.

Well, this weekend we changed to icewarp. The Outlookaddin is ok, but also sucks a bit like kerio's - had some hiccups today. Anything else seems fine, need to finetune antispam now.

From what I've been able to find in my research, the crux of the matter is the decision to have "offline mode". If you don't need that, most products connect to the server using IMAP protocol, and cache very little email data locally (header data, mostly). The vendor's OutLook plugin then takes care of synching calendars and contacts.

Are you using emClient on your new install? It's the "native" IW client. I use it successfully to talk to Kerio Connect, and it does not suffer from any of the performance issues that the offline client does. But again, the decision has to be made that it's OK to not process mail while not connected to the network.

Works if you only need imap, but as soon as public folders come into play, it gets interesting. We just moved back from IW, because the Outlook Plugin is really, really bad and slow. Kerio's way is faster by a lot. Also the outlook plugin removes the german names and changes them to english ones, serverside. No way to correct them and keep them.

Personally I also like the local cache. If everyone goes over a full online connection, the server usage increases by much and a folder update takes much longer. Not to mention that I can reboot the server without anyone really seeing it. Ok, sucks if you work without a laptop. But even with exchange - if you have large mailboxes, even outlook will go slow.

Sadly, we need to use Outlook, because we need to import our mails to the ERP System - no other way. Also emClient is good, but would have the same problems as Outlook has, because it needs to save the data, at least the headers locally. And our uses have mailboxes with up to 50k mails, usual count should be around 20-25k per User. EmClient also too some time to DL the mails. Kerios KOFF was faster (a bit). But yes, emClient would be a working alternative. The thing I didn't like the most about IW is the bad AD Sync/SSO functionallity and the missing admin tools kerio has.

With kerio you only need to set the AD and it works. Also installations are better - use the MSI and autoconfig login script off kerio. Or do it with GPO. That was also a point I didn't like. I want my user to login, start outlook or emclient and it should work without setting a pw/username or whatever. That didn't quite work with IW. At least the autoconfig part. AD Sync and SSO worked, but are a bit shitty documented and implanted.

I understand the need to stay with OutLook -- other plugins, ERP, etc. I'd counter that IMAP and public folders get along just fine. At least, they seem to work under Thunderbird. With Kerio, I have tested with Thunderbird / Lightning (using CardDAV/CalDAV) and it seemed to work pretty well.

I have been trying ThunderBird using exQuilla plugin. It doesn't seem that I can see any of my email folders that have been shared from other users. I believe I read that ThunderBird does not support them. Has anyone had success with shared email folders using Thunderbird.

Shared public folders seem to work just fine. Shared personal folders are a PITA in Kerio; we don't use them, so I've never tried.

What did you switch to? I'm pretty green with mailservers. Running KC 9.2.0 and really don't want to upgrade after GFI takeover; don't have time to waste on making broken bits work....

Hi,
we are doing our best to tune our OutlooSync. Actually, we have spent more than 4 months with development of it's new generation this year. There also will be available a brand new version coming with a very nice UI for integration the file storage and document collaboration features next year. Please feel free to whenever contact me in case of any troubles / questions.
