Kerio Outlook Connector (Offline edition)
Windows 10
Outlook 365 (16)

I searched the KB for backup. The result 'go to Configuration/...' doesn't seem to apply to either the Kerio tab in Outlook or accessing the account via Webmail.

My intent is to have a local data (all that is normally included in standalone Outlook's pst file) backup(s) in the event all goes to h*ll in hand wagon.

Is there a process that's reasonably straightforward and that can be automated?

That's client-side backup, and not really the server's responsibility. Also, if you are using the OutLook connector, it doesn't really apply, since the mail cache is not stored in a .pst file but in a proprietary database in (<user folder>\appdata\local\kerio connector\guid id).

Better to come up with a solid strategy for using the Kerio backup method, or some other external tool to backup the mail server's store folder.

Before posting, I kept ending up on the following page doing a google search for Kerio connect backup:

http://kb.kerio.com/product/kerio-connect/server-configurati on/archiving-and-backup/configuring-backup-in-kerio-connect- 1133.html

However, assuming that this page is what you mean by 'the Kerio backup method', I cannot find the backup/archive screen referenced on the page in either Outlook or Webmail?

FWIW, I routinely run Macrium Reflect drive images and data backups using SyncBackSE. However, as you explained and as I've found, there is no 'intelligible' local data store to backup with the preceding.

The 'backup/archive' function is an administrative function that is done at the server level. Kerio does not provide any mechanism to do client level backups from the client. Client side backups of mail are somewhat of a moot point, since the client never permanently downloads messages from the server. Beter to spend your resources on a good server backup strategy. (Archives created using OutLook's auto-archive feature are a different matter).

Then if the 'server' is an ISP provided service then your only option is reliance upon the integrity of the ISP's system?

Mark,

I'm supporting Macs and have used tools like Horcrux and E-Mail Archiver Pro.

While looking for other solutions, I did come across this for Windows: GFI Archiver. It might do what you need as it handles e-mail, calendars & contacts.

For a centralized archive of e-mail, I'm implementing MailArchiva to provide a central archive that's readily searchable.

Let us know what you end up selecting.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Jon

I've partially installed mailarchivia per your message given that's it free for my use/size. But I'm now stuck.

I got to this point in the install:
"Congratulations!

You have successfully configured MailArchiva.
To finish configuring the product, visit http://help.mailarchiva.com/#next-steps

1. Previous to receiving the above congrats screen I was asked to fill in the Domains. I have/had no clue so I entered (per the suggestion on the help wizard page (http://help.mailarchiva.com/enterprise-wizard) 'mailarchivia.com'.

2. I followed the link on the congrats screen mentioned previously which did not take me to a config screen but the help page for a config screen. Right off the bat I saw that I couldn't do what was asked even if I knew where I was supposed to be entering the information. The page said:
Kerio Config:

Login to Kerio Administration Console
Click Archiving and Backup Menu
Select Enable email archiving

I was told in a previous message that the archiving/backup menu was a function of the server--I'm using the client?

?

[Edit] P.S. Further, my attempt to login per 'Congrats' screen using my email address and the master login password (which I copied/pasted to eliminate possibility of typo) failed resulting in "Account cannot be found"

There are two ways to deliver messages to MailArchiva: direct SMTP and IMAP. From previous messages, it sounds like your Kerio Connect is hosted, so I'll give brief notes on the IMAP archiving method.

((presuming your domain is 'mydomain.com'))

  1. Open the kerio Connect administration console (https://mail.mydomain.com/admin)
  2. Create a new user mailbox named 'MailArchiva'. Assign a password.
  3. In the settings group (the little gear), find and click on 'archving and backup'
  4. Tick the box that says 'Enable e-mail archiving'
  5. Tick the box that says 'archive to the remote email address'
  6. Next to that, enter the e-mail address you just created 'mailarchiva<_at_>mydomain.com'
  7. click 'apply' in the lower right corner.

Message traffic will now be copied to that mailbox. Youi can verify by logging into the Kerio WebMail client as 'MailArchiva' and checking the inbox.

Now open your MailArchiva server's admin console (http://mailarchiva.mydomain.com:8090)

  1. click on 'configuration' on the top menu
  2. click 'Domains' on the left hand side. Enter all the domains your Kerio Connect server handles ('mydomain.com')
  3. Click 'Volumes' on the left hand side. make sure at least one volume is active.
  4. click on 'connections' on the left hand side of the screen
  5. Choose 'IMAP Client' and click 'new connection'
  6. Fill in the blanks as appropriate for your server. Generally the defaults for polling interval and messages per cycle are good. Check 'disable plain authentication'. Choose the 'delete and expunge' option, thought I'm not sure Kerio really honors it.
  7. Make sure 'Enabled' is checked, then click save. it will take a few minutes for MailArchiva to start polling the inbox of the mail account, but you should soon start to see the number of messages in the inbox go down.

At this point you've accomplished the basics of getting Krio and MailArchiva to work together. There are other knobs to twist in MailArchiva, but let's get this part working first.

Attempting to connect to the domain per your instruction 1, the browser returned the following:

mail.greenbergcm.com uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is only valid for the following names: *.estreet.com, estreet.com

estreet.com is my Kerio host and ISP. I presume they have restricted \admin to keep user out of the area to prevent the headache of having to constantly fix what users screw up.

Make sense?
