Contacts being saved to public folder on iPhone? [message #129679] Sun, 15 May 2016 19:34 Go to next message

We share our mail, contacts & calendars with iOS devices using IMAP, CardDAV and CalDAV. On Mac (and webmail) it's easy enough to see which account new contacts are stored in, and to move them if necessary. Also on Mac, you can set the default account for storing new contacts (regular account or public folder).

On iPhone, every new contact I make gets stored in public contacts. There seems to be no way of setting the default, or even choosing the account when creating the contact. It just goes straight into public folders and it can only be moved using webmail or a desktop app.

Is there a way of resolving this?

Thanks

James

Hi James,

Have you checked on the device what the default is? iPhone Settings->Mail, Contacts and Calendars->Contacts, what do you have in there? Also do you have other contact folder synced to your iPhone?

All the best,
Vicky

Hi Vicky

Thanks for your reply

In the 'default account' settings for contacts on iPhone, I see only iCloud and the Kerio account. There is no option to choose between private and public contact folders - I can only choose the account itself. Contacts are then saved into the public folder - though it's very hard to see this straight away due to the limitations of the iPhone address book. I have to turn off all folders (groups) and then turn them back on in turn to find out where the contact is saved.

Hope you can help.

Cheers

James

James,

Have you tried setting permissions to the public contacts so only administrator has the ability to write, allowing others to only read?

I finally went down that route when somebody's iOS device kept overwriting corrected data (new last name in my case) with old data.

So only the Administrator account and my personal account have read/write (aka Owner) privileges and everyone else is read only (aka Reader).

The way to set this up is to log into webmail with an admin account (I used the server administrator account), click on the Contacts icon, click on the triangle next to Public Folders:Contacts, select Sharing, then add & delete users/groups as required, setting up the majority of people as Readers.

You want as few Owners or Editors as possible here, simply to keep the possibility of someone making inadvertent changes (especially deletions) as low as possible.

If you have any questions, please let me know.

Cheers,
Jon

Hi Jon

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately this isn't going to work for me - although I agree with your point about the risk of inadvertent deletions.

However, I wouldn't want to prevent *all* of my users from adding public contacts. And furthermore, I certainly don't want to stop myself from being able to do it! But that means that every time I add a contact on my phone, it gets added to my company private contacts.

How have others worked around this?

Cheers

James
