I have a user that has started to get in trouble with his account! I think it's because of the size (83 GB)
Even when connecting to the web client I get in trouble, most of the time I receive a time out error

Any help to solve this would be great

Kind Regards
Marc

I thought we had some heavy hitters on our server with 1 or 2 GB!

I have to believe an 80 GB mailbox will certainly bog down this account. At 80 GB, it's pretty likely this user has a lot of attachments files. If the user is co-operative, you could ask them to go through their mail folders and sort by size and then save the attachment files, print the email to a PDF file with the attachment file and then delete that email.

I'd start with the basics and make sure they've cleared out their junk and trash folders. I'd also check your server settings and set limits on how long stuff can be in the trash before it's automatically cleared.

If this user is several pay grades above you, it may be time to recommend an archiving system that would let you offload their older emails to the archive system and then auto-delete them from the Kerio account. We use Mailstore and it does a great job for us.

There's been much discussion around this on these forums. What I've been able to glean is that the number of messages in a single folder often has more effect on performance than the actual size of the mail store. I don't know if there's a 'magic number', but i advise my users try to keep folders down to 2,000 messages each. If there's more, make subfolders and move some mail.

The folder we always have the most trouble with is 'Sent Items' -- Nobody ever things to do house keeping there.

If you have a lot of large mailboxes on your server, then you should deploy an archiving solution. I have setup MailStore for some of my customers. It runs on Windows. MailStore works great. It gives users the ability to access all of their old email through a web interface. One other thing you could do for this user with the huge mailbox is move a lot of that content off of the server by transferring it into local folders that are not hosted by the server. If they want to hoard all that email, let them be responsible for it. Email servers are not supposed to be file servers.

I have to agree that it is more of the number of emails in the folder than the size of the mail box. I have a couple hitting 15GB. If work station has plenty of memory, 10K to 15K numbers of emails is where things get sluggish.

The root of the problem is that some users simply won't take control over their email. They always say that they're too busy to do it, but they're never too busy to complain when their email starts having problems as a result of the hoarding. From my experience, Apple Mail seems to handle large mailboxes pretty well, for the most part. Outlook on Mac can't handle it. I tell users to keep their mailboxes below 15GB in size if they're using Outlook on Mac.
