We have one Kerio Connect Server.
On 30-06-2014 the Software Maintenance (SWM) expired. Today I was aked to renew SWM. Now we could get only a renew until 30-06-2015. Is this correct? Does this make sense?
- After 30-06-2014 we could not use Active Sync
- After 30-06-2014 Antivrus stopped working!

Hmm, this sounds like a bad joke!

Can anyone commit this situation?! Sad

Anti-virus update and ActiveSync are part of Software Maintenance, when Software Maintenance expires, they no longer function.

Here you will find some answers if you have questions about Software Maintenance:

After a expiration of an antivirus software it is still working! But not updating virus signatures any more.
In Kerio Connect it seems to be mixed up, Active Sync and Sophos stop working...The mailserver works... hmm

Sounds to me like a marketing gag living without SWM...

Yeah, but antivirus without updates after awhile is about as good as no antivirus. Granted, still effective for awhile, but shouldn't be relied upon if there are no updates. As for the ActiveSync, well, they are a software company that needs to make money somehow. Like other software or SaaS products, either certain features stop working or everything stops working without paying the subscription rate.

Kerio Technologies
As for Activesync- it's Microsoft's licensing rules.

For me it points out hat there is no difference (here - with Kerio Connect) to rent a software then have Software Maintanance running.

The initial price to buy Kerio Connect means that you can keep after SWM the software with less features!

I can understand what Kerio does/needs. But now I have to compare Exchange and Kerio diffrently, because Exchange ist a one time buy for 5 maybe 6 years. And Kerio Connect is a one time (big) fee and yearly SWM you can't live without!

I still think Kerio is a great product. But we have a few customers running Exchange for 5 or 6 years without SWM and without any problem.

I did not compare the price between Exchange and Kerio for a few experimental payments, but I here often from our customers: We don't know what happen in a year or two.(we have the money now) For that reason we want a solution that we pay now and will work for years...

I compared the price for 50 users:
Exchange costs approx. 100€ per user (one time). If you have Exchange by an Action Pack Subscription (~400€/a) you can say that Exchange costs ~5.000€ one time. The price for Kerio for 5 years is 3.536 €.
When you upgrade Exchange to a new version you need to buy new user licenses (you must not use Exchange 2010 user CALs with Exchange 2013). Exchange can be cheaper if you plan to upgrade every 10 years Wink

This means 1000€ in 6 years...

Kerio 10 User:
480 first Year
160 next Year (5 years)

480+800=1280 without ActiveSync and without Anti-Virus

Upps...

It is not a Price question. It seems to me renting not SWM...

Some of my understanding, please correct me if I am wrong:

- Exchange Server does not come with integrated anti-virus, third party anti-virus requires initial costs + yearly subscription where as Kerio connect comes with Sophos Integrated Antivirus already installed at low cost $2.20 per user per year
- Kerio Connect comes with fullly functional Backup; Backup on Exchange Server has limited functionality (No scheduling etc), third party backup application add to initial costs;
- Kerio Connect has lower hardware requirement compare to Exchange Server;
- Implementation/administration on Kerio Connect are easier compare to Exchange Server, thus lower the IT staff installation/maintenance cost;

If you would like to have a further discussion regarding Kerio Connect vs. Exchange in terms of Total Cost of Ownership, please feel free to contact our Sales Team:

Comparing pricing for Exchange and Kerio is useless. When you purchase a licence for exchange you get active sync for the life of exchange. With Kerio its 1yr ? in what world does that make sense. Activesync is open source. We use to be huge Kerio supporters but its getting to be nothing more then a money grab. With exchange you can have a 30-60GB mailbox or 1 Million messages per mailbox without an issue. With Kerio its 10GB or 10,000 items or it starts affecting EVERY user on the server. If you purchase 300 licenses for Kerio, you are stuck paying for the full 300 licenses of software maintenance even if you are only using 150. The only option is giving up the other 150 licenses that you have paid for. In its infancy Kerio was a great alternative but unfortunately that is no longer the case.

No, it is not free. It is a proprietary protocol covered by patents and you need a license from Microsoft to use it. And Microsoft dictates conditions for it.
If you want to use free, open-sourced protocols, go for CalDAV and CardDAV. Kerio Connect (unlike Microsoft Exchange which you apparently admire) does support these protocols and let customer choose what to use and where. You are no longer bound to one particular client or device.

Go for Kerio Cloud or ask any Kerio partner for hosting your server and you will pay only for mailboxes you really use. Even on monthly basis. It is that simple.

Pavel,

It is quite obvious that we use Kerio, hence the post. That being said, Kerio is making it more and more difficult to stay with them for reasons i've listed and more. I hate microsoft just as much as the next guy (just FYI). Other mail providers are able to offer active sync at no additional charge so i fail to see why Kerio can't eg: SOGo. Lets be honest , NO ONE in the real world uses CalDAV or CardDAV period. I actually did speak to someone tonight in regards to what Kerio calls the SAS licensing which is something I can honestly say our sales rep has never mentioned. Regardless, it doesn't fix the fact that more and more people/companies are looking for larger mailboxes and without a tremendous performance hit it appears kerio is unable to provide that.

It seems it's not true:
https://sogo.nu/files/docs/SOGoInstallationGuide.html#_micro soft_enterprise_activesync

In order to use the SOGo ActiveSync support code in production environments, you need to get a proper usage license from Microsoft. Please contact them directly to negotiate the fees associated to your user base.

To contact Microsoft, please visit:

Inverse inc. provides this software for free, but is not responsible for anything related to its usage.
