Testing the 9.1 version on a Kerio Control Box 1000 Series and a 100 series box and i found a serious problem.
When i use Application Awareness then the internet speed (up and down) goes from 60/60 to 4/4. When i disable the new feature then the speed comes back.
Is this a know bug?

Application Awareness does cause Snort to consume more memory. When you run your tests, is there anything in the Active Hosts-->Connections status report that looks unusual? Unexpected traffic rule or bandwidth rule being applied?
FYI, Active Connections-->Info will show detected applications.
Perhaps someone else can comment with a bit more authority on how much of an impact Application Awareness can have on throughput.

I tested the Beta version and in application filtering i found more application, for example facebook chat.
Now on RC1 for example there is only facebook and not facebook chat.
can you tell me if something was changed?
As other told, is not very nice to have Web Categories and Application Categories mixed togheter...it's not user friendly.

There were some changes in application list - some applications were grouped together to improve user experience.
Quote:As other told, is not very nice to have Web Categories and Application Categories mixed togheter...it's not user friendly.
Would it be better when user knows which application he want to block, but must go through two separate lists in two different dialogs ?
Most users probably won't care what technology is behind it - they just want to block ie. Dropbox.

Hi Petr,
facebook and facebook chat are 2 different thing. Facebook is a "web site", facebook chat is an application. Now there is only facebook.
After this grouping how i can block only facebook chat and not facebook?
About the question:
----
Would it be better when user knows which application he want to block, but must go through two separate lists in two different dialogs ?
Most users probably won't care what technology is behind it - they just want to block ie. Dropbox.
----
Application and Web url are two different things
If a user is not able to understand this thing is better that he don't put the hand on the firewall.
Kerio Control is simple to managed but is not a game for incompetent.
So the answer is Yes.
If you look to other firewall, Web/Url filtering and Application Filtering are separate application and dialog interface.
thanks

Most applications use encrypted connection or are specifically designed to bypass firewall rules and filtering (ie. Skype, TeamViewer and various VPN/proxy tunnels). These will always be hard to detect reliably.
TeamViewer switches to anonymous UDP stream once it connects. So it's possible to detect only initial first connection to their servers.
Application detection is powerful and will work for most normal applications. But applications and their protocols are evolving.
