After much trial and error, I found that sSMTP is a solution for sending/receiving system (root) messages on a Linux installation.

This post lead me in the right direction:

Can I set up system mail to use an external SMTP server?

The KB post that I thought would help did not:

Replace sendmail with the binary from Kerio Connect

I'm sure a Linux guru could have found a simpler solution but sSMTP seems pretty simple.
