We've got a customer who has been migrated from Windows Live Domains to Kerio Connect.
On WLD (hotmail) and Gmail any email that is sent via SMTP is copied to the sent items irrespective of the settings on the client
Our customer won't move away from POP3 and I'm wondering if there is a way to get a copy of each email they send via SMTP from Kerio Connect into their sent items

Hi James,
The POP3 protocol itself will only download copies of what is in the users mailbox so by default this protocol will not take a copy of the 'Sent Items'. What they might be able to do is to connect their email client via IMAP and then copy the sent items folder from there into their 'Sent Items' on the POP3 account.

unfortunately IMAP isn't an option. Eventually I am going to move them to EWS but for now I am stuck with POP
Are you aware of any server side journalling rules maybe. As each user has to authenticate against the server I am wonder if we can snag the mail there like google do

As I understand the question, the users have been migrated to Kerio Connect. When they send an e-mail through the kerio connect server, you want a copy of the outbound message to be in the 'Sent Items' folder. This is NOT a function of POP3. In fact it isn't a function SMTP, either. It is a function of the client. All the modern clients I've used in the past few years do this by default, and it has to be expressly disabled.
What program are the users using to send and receive mail?
If you need to bring the user's OLD 'Sent Items' folder from HotMail to the 'Sent Items' folder on their Kerio account, then as Vicky says, IMAP is your best friend, although I can think of a sneaky work-around using POP3. Why has IMAP been taken off the table?

I completely understand it's not a function of POP3 and because it's POP that means the user has a local mail file that will never sync with the server.
There's no particular reason for not using IMAP but we monitor our bandwidth closely and EWS seems to use a lot less than IMAP.
The reason I am stuck with POP3 right now is because the client wanted a seamless transition with no change from what they where used to.
So back to the SMTP question I'll explain what they had before which might shed some light on what I'd like to achieve. Previously the customer was using Windows Live Domains (essentially their own domain on hotmail/outlook.com servers) They where using POP3 not IMAP because that's how their previous IT person set them up.
However one of the "features" of hotmail/outlook.com and something Google offers on gmail is that any email sent via authenticated SMTP get's copied to the users sent items. Essentially this meant that even though they where using POP3 and SMTP all emails sent from his laptop where available in webmail.
If I where using Exchange in this scenario I would simply create a transport rule that took any email sent by an authenticated user and copy it to their sent items.
My enquiry at this stage is whether or not there is some kind of cool hack or work around I can use to achieve my end goal until I can move the users to IMAP or EWS.

I see. The issue is that the client is using POP, which pretty much requires that all the folders be local to the PC, so when a message is sent, it lands in the local device's 'Sent Items' folder. What the user wants is a copy to land in the 'sent items' folder on the server.
Sorry, no help here, I'm afraid. The user will just have to bite the bullet and use WebMail exclusively, allow IMAP, or use the Kerio Off-line client.
