We are planning to move our mail application to Kerio Connect in the next 4 weeks. I plan to run Kerio Connect on a Windows 2012 R2 box in vSphere.
What is recommended for specs? I'm looking for partitioning information specifically. The memory and number of processors I can adjust at any time, but I am planning to start with 2 quad core procs and 8GB or RAM. We have just over 250 accounts, currently utilizing about 250GB of space. We are not going to implement any quotas on our users. Some users have over 10GB of data, some use a few mbs.

I haven't worked with vSphere, but 8GB of memory I would think is the minimum memory that I would recommend for 2012R2 and Kerio. More would be better. The other thing is disk access. With Kerio Connect (not sure if you are currently using Connect), disk access needs to be the fastest that you can afford.

Linux only, why run many unnecessary win services ?
250 accounts, 8GB RAM, HP Proliant 1 quad core CPU, HW RAID with SAS disks, 2TB disk space.
No problems, stability, fast.
Why use big Windows for Kerio ? Linux is fast, simple and reliable.

Linux can be a good solution, if one is so inclined. Everything I've been able to find out indicates that performance wise, neither Windows or Linux has a clear advantage for running connect given the same hardware. This makes the OS choice a matter of preference. For a business, the few hundred dollar one-time expense for a windows license should not be that big a deal. Where your expertise lies with regard to maintaining the OS should be a more significant factor. It is here, where of the 4 IT folks, only one has any significant expertise with Linux. We've run Connect for years on Windows with very little trouble.

As is always the case when discussing OS's, your mileage may vary.

I would love to use Linux and we tested on the prebuilt Debian vm. With only a staff of 4 with me being the only one that knows Linux, our executives wanted to run Windows after we had some service failures since our staff couldn't resolve some issues fast enough on some servers running some vendor apps.

I have often wondered if switching over to Linux from Win2008 would yield any real performance advantages.

Currently 25 Users on a HyperV 2012 Server with 2012 Guest and Kerio. The Kerio Database dosn't need much to run but with 250 Users I would say 8 GB is the lowest you should get.

Same with the CPU usage - it's low. Try to start with 8 GB/4 Core and look at the usage, if needed upgrade.

Way more important is the HDD Speed, because Kerio is extremly file based, that means many random i/o. Maybe a Raid 10 with 8 SAS 15K might be an idea. Also do a pre-filled vhd/vdx, no dynamic growth. Better i/o.

Also depends how you connect to kerio - webclient, outlook with offline connector, terminalserver (< ts = one SSD, build into server, mount to windows, use as cache hdd) etc.

And on another note I would recommend to use hyper as a host system, because you get hyperv replica for free, which enables you to nice disaster recovery scenarios. Only thing you need for that is a free vm license on another hardware of a SA for the current 2012 license, which allows a cold standby on the emergency server for all licensed, active vm guests on the current server. I like it
