Outlook 15 for Mac for Office 365 users available - Does Kerio work? [message #117209] Fri, 31 October 2014 18:52 Go to next message

With http://blogs.office.com/2014/10/31/new-outlook-mac-available -office-365-customers/ MS made Outlook 15.3 available for Office 365 users (it seems all variants of it, I have the educational variant).

My question would be if this version works with the most recent version of Kerio Connect (I am running 8.3.4 patch 1 (3377) currently on Linux) or if I should be careful.

I did not want to finish the import process from Outlook 2011, as it said something of an Exchange 2010 mailbox which would not be available anymore (for older versions?) after import.

It would be great if some users who made the jump already could report, or if we could get some information from Kerio.

You should be careful. This version was not tested and is not currently supported in Kerio Connect.

Just testing it out and it currently doesn't connect to an exchange server we have setup.

IMAP works fine.

Looks like it would be best to stay clear for the time being.

That is exactly why I asked. Better safe than sorry.

Thanks for Pavel for clarifying and HappyLog for trying it out. I will stay away with my Kerio mailbox for now. As it is a great new version for MacOS (much better than the 5 years old 2011 version from 2010), I hope to be able to use it soon.

I am aware that this version is currently only available for Office 365 subscribers (quite a limited number of potential users, especially for the Mac version), but it will be soon for the general public. So good to start early. Very Happy

It's a shame it doesn't work as i was hoping it would solve some headaches we're having with shared folders continuously syncing and also speed up Outlook as 2011 is slow.

Shame we have to use 2011 due to certain features it has that no other client has.

I can confirm that only IMAP works with Outlook 15. (Kerio Connect 8.4.0 RC1)

In that sense Outlook 15 is rather disappointing - it only supports (real) Exchange and IMAP/POP. For now Kerio users have no way to integrate contacts and calendars with the new Mac version of Outlook (don't get me wrong - I blame MS for such a poor protocol support!)

Unfortunately cases like that prove that Kerio Connect will probably never be a real Exchange alternative (I am using Kerio Connect since 2006 and like 95% of it Wink

It depends on what "real Exchange alternative" definition you mean. Is it a server for MS Outlook? Or a mail and groupware server for SMBs? If you are not locked in MS Outlook world, there is a plenty of great servers and services, many of them may fit your needs better than MS client and server.

Kerio Connect is not a copy of MS Exchange. It is an alternative.

Kerio has a great track of quickly adressing all emerging challenges in the Groupware field. They have pushed out updates for all kinds of new clients and protocols. I am quite confident they will also solve this - it is not yet even a - problem.

MS Outlook for Mac 15 has been announced 2 (!) days ago. And not even for "the general public". I would assume Kerio didn't have access to any earlier version (if anybody outside MS at all). The only server software OL15 has been tested against is Exchange 2013 Server (and some IMAP servers maybe). I am therefore completely ok with Kerio not yet working with OL15.

Apart from that: "Outlook 15 is rather disappointing - it only supports (real) Exchange and IMAP/POP"?? Well, for sure MS won't test it against Kerio (or other Exchange alternatives)! Kerio has to adapt to work with OL15 in that respect. And they will.

One more thing: Kerio is 120% of Exchange. Exchange does not support CalDAV/CardDAV. It does not have an instant messaging server. It does not run on Linux or MacOS. It uses waay more system ressources.

Guys, don't get me wrong - I am a big fan of Kerio Connect and I am absolutely not complaining about the fact that Kerio is not yet supporting Outlook 15 (it just came out a day ago)

Of course MS isn't testing Outlook against Kerio or any other 3rd party mailserver but Outlook 15 seems to no longer support CalDAV/CardDAV and also not ActiveSync - that's what I consider disappointing.

Outlook - on Windows or Mac OS - has NEVER supported CalDAV/CardDAV. And the only MS mail software currently working with ActiveSync is the Metro Mail App on Windows 8, Outlook did never use ActiveSync.

I am only a "hobby Mac user" - but how does the Outlook 2011 / Kerio integration work then? (I do have CalDAV, CardDav accounts that are definitely being used by Outlook 2011 on my Mac).

I had the impression that Outlook 2011 was indeed using CalDAV and CardDav - I could be wrong though.

I am aware that Outlook never supported ActiveSync but is there any good reason for not adding that support on a "new" version of Outlook?

Outlook 2011 uses "Exchange Web Services" (EWS, http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/office/bb409286(v=ex chg.150).aspx ) to work with Exchange servers and with Kerio as well. Thunderbird+Lightning use EWS if used with an Exchange server. With Kerio, Thunderbird+Lightning would/could use CalDAV/CardDAV.

Btw.: Apple Mail together with an Exchange Server uses EWS as well. With Kerio it normally uses IMAP+CalDAV/CardDAV.

Ah Ok - my bad.
As I didn't have an Exchange Account configured under "System Preferences / Internet Accounts" I thought that Outlook 2011 was using the CalDAV/CardDAV accounts as well.

Thanks for the clarification!

@Thunderbyte: I'm just curious: which provider do you use for Thunderbird/Lightning to work with EWS? Did you test it with Connect? Thanks

Hello Pavel,

I myself do not use Thunderbird/Lightning with EWS. But a colleague uses it at work (I think) on Windows with a normal Exchange 2013 server. As they have no possibility to use CalDAV/CardDAV with Exchange, Lightning has to support EWS.

As I don't really use Thunderbird, I have not tested it on Kerio. With Kerio, CalDAV and CardDAV might be the better options anyway, isn't it?
