Archiving does increase the amount of space used by messages. Basically, it's a "tee"; the message is delivered to the recipient(s)' inbox, and a copy is put in the archive folder. By default, the archive folder is in the same root location as the message store, but you can over-ride that in the administration web page. I doubt there's much impact on server performance, unless you have a habit of accessing the archive to search for messages. I know the built-in backup will include the archive if it's in the default location. I don't know if it does when the archive is located elsewhere.

You may want to double check this - someone had told me in the past this was not true. I can't find the post or email.. but I've always understood the Backup only backed up the message store, not the Message Archive. Maybe I've been wrong the last 3 years?
Can someone from Kerio state for sure?
