Hello all,

We performed a DR test on our email server this past weekend, here are the steps that were taken:

--After Friday's differential backup, email services stopped.
--Backup files were transferred to our DR site.
--Once transfer was complete, they were imported into Kerio Connect 8.13.
--DR email server rebooted
--Once server was online, email tests were performed, all of my emails were there. email server working flawlessly. I had a couple users test as well, report 100% working.
--Stopped email services
--Performed a full backup of email in DR site, then transferred to our local office.
--Restored email data with kmsrecover, just as before.
--Rebooted email server
--When I logged in, I had all my email, just as before, even had my tests.

However, I at work today and 3 people (so far) have told me they are missing emails from Aug 18 - Aug 23. One user also reported that emails she previously moved from inbox to subfolders are now back in her inbox.

Not sure what could have happened. Were my steps to perform this incorrect? did I miss something?

EDIT: I just had another user tell me email they filed to folder between 8/18 and 8/23 are in her inbox AND in the folders she previously moved them to. Not sure how this happened.

Any help is appreciated.

Has anyone experienced issues like this when they do a backup/restore? I'm not sure what I should be looking for since this only impacted a couple people.

Though the Kerio team will likely differ on this from my opinion, when I'm doing a transfer of data like you did, I usually will use rsync to move data while the server is "live" then shut down the server services and perform a final rsync of data (much less and all files are closed).

While I know that the Kerio tools are intended to work correctly on live data, I honest can't say I can get them to work well. I've read and re-read the manual and even when I think I understand the proper options, I haven't had much success getting the restore to work cleanly.

Whenever I've had people missing mail, I've gone to my rsync (or other) backups for recovery, not the Kerio provided tools.

Also, with the mail data size over 600GB, my fulls take almost 20 hours and the differentials are taking 20-30 minutes.

For rsync, the daily copy (either over the network or to a local disk) takes around 20 minutes. I haven't run a full recently, but I wouldn't expect it to take 20 hours.

YMMV, but that's been my experience.

Cheers,
Jon
