Hi raxip,

You will need to add the new file extensions to an excluded list.

Alternativly, you can configure Attachment Checking rules which block only specific file-types. All other file-types will not be blocked by Attachment Checking (although they will still be scanned by the other modules such as virus scanning etc).

I wish that was true

I do not have these extensions in the block list

docx, xlsx,

here is what happens

Last Error

File "doc1.docx\.rels" triggered rule "Default Attachment Checking Rule".

More Info

The file ".rels" was blocked by the attachment checking module because there is no file name before the extension.

Will try an exclusion list, can i just put it ahead of the block list?

You need two rules to do this:

The first rule lists the attachments you want to delete outright. For instance, there is no reason my users should ever receive .SCR attachments by e-mail, so I zap them in this rule.

The second rule quarantines *all* attachments *except* the ones you explicitly permit. For instance, I allow .JPG, .ZIP and .XLS files through, among many others.

  • If someone sends an MSI file, it's zapped by the first rule.
  • If someone sends a PPT file, it doesn't trigger the first rule, and it is on the exception list for the second rule. Therefore, it's allowed through.
  • If someone sends something I haven't seen before (like the first time I got a .DOCX file), it passes the first rule and gets quarantined by the second rule. If it's a legitimate case, I add it to the second rule's exception list.

Hope this helps. I am using the latest version of MS.

Joe .. I've been researching this issue and found your suggestion very helpful. I've built a couple of rules following your "delete bad attachments" and "quarantine all but the following" method, but I've run into one snag.

My list is up to 36 valid attachments, but there's a 37th that won't take. We have several e-mails coming in every day with an attachment being caught as "nofilename". The attachment appears to be signature files from the senders. I've tried adding "nofilename" and "nofilename.*" to the allowed list, but they're still being caught by the filter.

Any suggestions getting these through? Tapping in daily to approve those messages manually simply isn't feasible.

Thanks,
Neil

Hi Neil - Is the attached file really called nofilename, or is it just MailSecurity's way of telling you that there was no file name found on the attachment (the part to the left of the dot)?

Try adding *. to your list of approved attachments. It should be harmless to users and will cover this nofilename scenario.
