Dear We would like to configure GFI MailEssentials to move the spam emails to the users’ junk mail folder in Microsoft Exchange 2003. Base on GFI KB we need enable the option 'Filter Junk E-mail' in OWA for all users. http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID002097 But in our system, OWA is disabled for almost users. We can temporary enable OWA for all users to enable the option 'Filter Junk E-mail' in OWA. After that we will disable OWA. Do GFI Mailessential move the spam emails to the users’ junk mail folder when OWA is disabled? regards.....

I've never liked the idea of having to manually enable the filter. PITA. However, you could try it through Group Policy. It might be that I'm not doing it quite right, but I've never found it very reliable. Instead, I tag the spam with something like [SPAM], and use the rules manager rulemgmt.exe to move the mail to the Junk E-Mail folder. This works well. It also works well in a multiple-exchange-server environment. If you use the Rules Manager, you need to be disciplined enough to add a rule to each new user that comes along.

RSP You really like using that rulemgmt. It doesn't take that much server overhead? Easy to remove rules if necessary?

It's not that I "really like it", more that it seems to work the best in a number of situations that I've come across. Plus having had to use it for a multi-exchange environment, it's a bit like second-nature. It doesn't appear to have an overhead, and the user-generated rules in Outlook/Exchange would probably outweigh it considerably. Removal is straight-forward through the same .exe
