FYI..

I just install MS9 beta 5 and the update problem is NOT present in this version. The definition files update properly. Since the final release for ME9 is supposed to be next week I figured I'd give it a try.

SAV10 ignores your exclusions settings. It will scan everything on your system, no matter what you do.

So I am correct in thinking that SAV 10 scans the Exchange Information Store ( something that is definately not advised by Microsoft!), even though it's excluded from the scan?

Symantec had me test to make sure exclusions were working correctly. They had me place the eicar test virus in the GFI directory, and sure enough the directory was excluded in the scans.

It seems to be something else they added to the version 10 auto-protect that conflicts with the GFI updates. However, I'm still waiting for a response from Symantec which they stated would be by weeks end.

Finally a solution is here!

After a upgrade to the new GFI Mail Security 9.0, build 20050727, the problem is gone!

All 4 Scanning engines can update properly with Symantec v10 running fully.

Glad I was able to get an update for free.

Cheers

Hi Group,

For what it's worth I'm posting my most recent Email from Symantec below.

---------------------------------------------

Hi Steve,

I just got back from level 2 and they have been able to reproduce the issue. There is no ETA on a fix or workaround but it should be forthcoming. I will keep you appraised of any new information.

Thank you,

Is it the case that GFI are leaving this in the hands of Symantec to fix? I appreciate the new version must be absorbing a lot of GFI's resources but it would be a real shame if this particular fix was not followed through. I note specifically this is critical in cases where the use of version 9 is not possible due to gateway only install. Has there been an official statement regarding whose "fault" this is yet?

why do you think this is a fault of someone?... I don't think that you can blame someone for this problem....
There is always a possibility that programs conflict with each other..

I have a potential fix from Symantec and will implement it on Friday 8/19 evening Pacific Time.

If it works I'll post the steps here and make the file available by Email request.

Will there be any kind of official statement from GFI on this issue as in a KB article or the likes?

Regards
Andreas

Edit: I've made the changes and automatic updates appears to be working again (after a reboot).

Hi,

If you encounter this problem, you have the following options:

Upgrade to GFI MailSecurity version 9, since this version does not have the problem.

If you are unable to upgrade to GFI MailSecurity version 9 at the moment, please contact Symantec support who can provide a solution for Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition version 10.

As noted before previous versions of Symantec Anti-Virus Corporate Edition did not have this problem either.

It is recommended that any patches for Symantec software are obtained directly from Symantec support.

Hi -A-,

Are you sure, you want to update to SAV 10?
As I read, you are using NT4.
NT4 is not supported by SAV 10.

Cheers, Bernd
