A good test for users running SAV Corporate edition (client) on their Exchange servers.

Uninstall the currently installed SAVCE.
Reboot.
Run the install from the CD (not the deployment tool, use the "install symantec antivirus" option),
run a CUSTOM UNMANAGED install and DESELECT all of the optional auto-protect email components. This will prevent the installation of the proxy component, which will otherwise be active even if e-mail auto-protect is switched off via client options or SSC). If it solves your problem let me know.

Tony

Progress report: I'm working with Symantec now, and jumping through all of their hoops. I'll let you all know if we make any progress.

If you have a standalone install of SAV then you may be able to exclude the directories on that machine with no problems.

If you have the server/client version then, as SYMC_Tony suggests, you may need to change the configuration in the Symantec System Center.

Martin

Well SAVCE 10.0 is not scanning other folders I have configured it not to scan. It's not scanning my Exchange folder for example and this is working perfectly. I have no reason to believe that SAVCE is scanning the GFI folder even though I have it excluded.

Also, I have disabled the "Scan for Security Risks" on the server but I still get the error when updating BitDefender defs.

Hi again,

It seems that currently the following can be done to update the GFI MailSecurity virus definition files successfully:

1. Downgrade to Symantec AV corporate edition version 9.

OR
2. Disable Auto-protect from Symantec and update the GFI MailSecurity virus definition files manually from the MailSecurity configuration.

In the meantime, we are still checking with Symantec on the issue.

Currently, our SAV9_CE server is running on an NT4 SP6a box which it shares with MS-Exchange.

Our GFI box is running as a gateway/relay server.

Does this issue affect the GFI box (at the moment, we are running SAV9_CE on it with the GFI folders excluded - set from the SAV server).

Thanks for any info you can provide.

Hi -A-,

The issue has only been encountered when running MailSecurity with Symantec AV Corporate Edition verion 10 or higher. Users with previous versions of Symantec AV did not encounter the problem.

Hi Nick, thanks for replying..

As mentioned, we currently are running SAV v9 and we have a v10.1 CD which is due to be installed - but I don't want to proceed with the SAVv10 install if there is a problem with it and running MESS/MSEC in gateway mode.

On the mail relay server, we are currently running:

MESS: v11 - build 20050526
MSEC: v8.1 - build 20040723
SAV: v9.0.3.1000 - scan engine: 51.1.0.15

Will we have a problem if we decide to install v10 of SAV on it?

Thanks

Just wondering what the status of this issue is...? I'm currentally disabling the server's auto-protect and allowing for manual updates (tedious). Any news from the guys at Symantec?

Same here. Right now either symantec or GFI are not able to provide a working solution for this problem. Can GFI imagine how many people already upgraded their servers to the new AV 10.0 version?

For the moment I've got to disable the autoprotection, manually update the files and enable it again... every day - this can't be the solution!

Please provide a solution asap, thank you.

Why don't you go back to SAV 9.0....

From the beginning of this problem I went to go back to SAN 9.0 and that works fine by me.... I think I wait untill they have a working solution.

For all those who have this problem, I recommend you to install SAV 9.0

hey duck, do you know if SAV 9 system center/quarantine supports 10.x clients? I have just over 80 clients that I've updated to 10.x engine/client. I've checked on Symantec's site but no info on rollback for server or clients... Did you roll clients back as well?
