We are still investigating this issue. In the meantime, if you still have not done so, please send us a set of troubleshooting files, so we can investigate further.

However it seems that all who are encountering this issue have the same virus scanning software running.

Thank you.

I found a work around to at least getting the updates to download and install.

1: Go to the c:\program files\gfi\mailsecurity\autoupdates
2: Delete the files within the AVX and Norman folders.
3: Turn off symantec autoprotection. Either through symantec system center of in your program files.
4: Now go back into mailsecurity configuration
5: Go to virus scanning engines
6: Select which one you want to update
7: Select update tab
8: Click on the Download updates now button

This will redownload the updates and should install them. Make sure autoprotect is down for the
next one also, my autoprotect comes back on after 5 min automatically.

Seems to me that the new anti spyware software in symantec 10 is preventing the update of some files.

Hope this works for yall, it worked for me.

Nice that you have it running, but I don't disable symantec, just to have GFI downloading the virus-definitions. I'm vulnerable for virussen by that moment. I can't afford that to my system/company

I uninstalled symantec 10 and returned to 9.x.

I will wait untill GFI has a solution (or symantec)... so I don't have to disable Symantec.

I hope that u think about the vulnerability of your system/company... My advise is just to get back to Symantec 9.x and just wait untill they have a solution

F.Y.I.

Yes, disabling the Symantec Auto-Protect feature seems to allow GFI autodef updates to download and update the local engine files. Quite strange, because most of us exclude the GFI program folders from being scanned anyhow. Disabling security-threats from within auto-protect makes no difference.

I'm working with GFI support, and sent them file monitor logs. The developers can see that something is affecting their files, but aren't sure what. I'll be sending them process information logs shortly.

Hopefully we will get to the bottom of this soon!

I read, I think in another thread here, that Symantec AV 10 has a built-in spyware component and that this may be connected to these issues.

If you think about it in terms of spyware, how would SAV10 know what is a legitimate update to the system from a bad one, unless you can manually configure it?

This would then not be a GFI issue but a Symantec problem. Maybe GFI could change the update process to get around the problem, but the fault would still be on Symantec's end.

That is, if what I read is correct.

I agree that its Symantec's issue. We've had issues with it detecting the Remote Administration programs as spyware because its a remote control tool although they don't kill pcanywhere, or dameware even). I also love the fact you have to install a registry key to disable the autoscan of the system as virus def updates, and system startup...such great features, but such poor implementation...

Suggestion to GFI;

Why don't you guys offer a server-based AV solution that is compatible with both MailSecurity and MailEssentials.

We don't need all of this spyware and security threat crap that Symantec is providing for servers. No one should be surfing the web on a server anyhow.

How about an all-in-one Mail and Server AV solution GFI? Us administrators have better things to do than mess with vendor incompatibility issues.

Just a thought!

I find solutions...

Go to Realtime CFG of SAV 10 and exclude GFI folder.. Save it and all will work (plus don't forget exclude in full/quick system scan same folder)

Hasn't worked for me. I have configured the server auto protect not to look at the GFI directory, and have also blocked it from having a system scan.
BitDefender still downloads but fails to update.

ho hum.....

All of us have GFI's folder excluded. It's in the installation manual to exclude it. It does not resolve the problem.

GFI we are still waiting. I am sick and tired of having to login to several different clients servers DAILY to disable Symantec to update the Virus Defs of GFI. Please devote more resources towards resolving this problem.

Quoting Steve:

End of quote.

If you don't want the spyware/security threat scanning for some systems, you can create a client group on the System Center and disable those features, or any other feature more or less... it's all in the manual!

I'm in Symantec's Groupware support team, if someone from GFI is available to send me an exact desc of the problem and the relevant GFI software (with a trial key or something) I can replicate and raise the issue. Let me know via PM if you're interested.

Regards,
Tony [Wink]

Vertices,
You seem convinced that this is a GFI problem. Or are you working with Symantec on this issue too? If it's excluded and it doesn't update, but when disabled it does update, do you think there's a chance that it might not really be excluding that folder?

If you have a standalone install of SAV then you may be able to exclude the directories on that machine with no problems.

If you have the server/client version then, as SYMC_Tony suggests, you may need to change the configuration in the Symantec System Center.
