Dear GFI-

First, thanks for providing this software for free.

When I attempt to back up to an external hard drive, GFI generates "long path" error messages. When I change the names of the listed files and then attempt to back up, I get a new error message with a new list of "long path" files. Most of these files have names that are less than 250 characters long.

I would prefer not to go to Zip compression if I can help it. Do you have any suggestions?

Regards,

Mockup

Hello Mockup
I will need more information to be able to debug this. Please send me your .GTB and .LOG files of the task. You can find out how to do that here.

Hello Mockup,
The problem is not the initial path length of a file, of course that the path will be smaller than 255 characters. The problem appears when a file will be copied from this initial location (the source) to the backup location (the destination).

Let's say that you have a file called file.dat that is located in "C:\Folder1\Folder2\", the path of this file will be "C:\Folder1\Folder2\file.dat". This path has 28 characters.

Now, let's say that you make a backup task (named "My Backup Task") that will copy your file to "E:\Backup Files". The new path of the file will become : "E:\Backup Files\My Backup Task\C\Folder1\Folder2\file.dat". So, the new path will have 58 characters, much longer than the initial path length.

GFI Backup 2009 will calculate the final path of the files before starting the backup and if this path is longer, you will be warned.

Also, please note that the current version of GFI Backup 2009 has a bug related to the long paths, cascading some folder in the destination when a long path is detected and the user continues the backup. You can read more about this issue here : http://forums.gfi.com/Cascading_backup_folders/m_900779346/tm.htm

There is a new version of GFI Backup released today, so I strongly recommend that you upgrade to this version, because the issue with cascading folders is solved.

Dumitru-

I have emailed GFI and LOG files to the support address as you suggested.

Eugen-

Thanks for you response. However, I'm not sure it explains why I keep getting new file names in the "Long Path" error messages after I have fixed the old ones.

Regards,

Mockup

There's one other thing nobody has brought up.

Most External Drives come formatted FAT32.
Format NTFS or Convert the drive and try again, you may have better luck.

Touching on something Eugen said, you have to remember that ANY backup software that's going to output your data to say, an external drive or a usb stick (as opposed to a tape backup), will be hindered by the fact that the backup software is ADDING additional length to the path, such as GFI does by doing this:

quote:

  E:\Backup Files\My Backup Task\C\

First they're adding "Backup Files", then they're adding the NAME of the task "My Backup Task" and finally they're throwing in the drive letter, in this case "C".  That's an extra **27** characters right there!  :O  If you wisely named your task something very obvious, you're probably using even MORE characters than the above example.

Now, if on the other hand, your files (including their paths) are only 30 characters long and your description is only 30 characters long, then perhaps there IS a problem with GFI...  lol...

Just an idea from someone who's seen it all...  :)

Have a good day!
Keith

Eugen thanx for a free service. Very nice.

The built date is needs to be changed on the download page.

Just to close out this thread, I downloaded the new version and it works as long as I exclude the IE cache from the backup.

Thanks Again,

Mockup
