Agent v8 SNMP Timeout - 25.Sep.2009 2:44:04 PM

Hi All,

About 2 weeks ago, with Agent 7.1.6, we implimented the SNMP monitoring. Everything tested ok and we were off to the races in no time, however, we just installed the upgraded Agent 8.0.1 to our servers, and are now getting errors with SNMP.

When performing the test from within the Agent Setup, SNMP tests report "ERROR: SNMP Timeout". I've tried using localhost and LAN IP addresses, SNMP v1 and v2c, confirmed that the SNMP service is running, and tested a few additional SNMP components, which produced the same error message.

I'm just curious if anyone else has run in to any issues with the new agent and SNMP, or if there are any recommendations as to what to try in order to get this working.

The issue is happening on both HP and Dell Servers, and as mentioned before, all were working in the previous version. The network consists of Server 2003 and Server 2008 boxes. Server management software (Dell OMSA and HP SM) are accessible and report no issues.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts and advice.
Ryan

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your feedback - we have had a number of reports of this problem and have been working on it this week - we hope to have an updated release shortly (i.e. next week) that should fix these problems.

Regards,
Alistair.

Hi again,

We believe we have sorted this problem and are rolling out an updated beta version of the agent that should resolve these issues.

Thanks for your feedback to date - please let us know how you get on with this.

Regards,
Alistair.

I have a similar problem.

I just added two new DELL servers.  I used the beta version of the agent.  On one server everything works ok.  On the second server I get SNMP results from the APC UPS but errors from the DELL server.
The error is the same "ERROR: Invalid OID" on all checks

Both servers have the same OpenManage version (I don't know if it matters). I called DELL and they basically pointed me to the SNMP documentation for OpenManage (which is basically the same on the server that everything works).

Any ideas? Thanks

Can you confirm which versio of the agent you were using to do the testing? There were some issues with Agent 8.0.1 but these should now be resolved in 8.0.2 - if you are using the later version it would be helpful if you can confirm any more details of the configuration (machine address particularly) you are using. If you'd rather not put that level of detail in a post please email me directly.

Regards,
Alistair.

I'm using 8.1.0 (beta). SNMP for APC works on that machine.  Only the DELL checks don't work.  I don't understand what you mean when you say "machine address". Please explain and I'll send the information via email.

Thanks for the help

Hi,

I meant how the destination for the check is being set - is it localhost, an IP address, a hostname. Can you also confirm the model of Dell hardware that you are using and the OpenManage version?

Thanks again,
Alistair.

We're currently using agent v8.0.4 on the servers we monitor.  We've had a handful or issues.  On the situation with the Invalid OID message, we reinstalled open manage and we were able to monitor the SNMP checks afterwards.

We did have a situation over the weekend where all SNMP alerts on one server reported faults.  This had also taken place on a different server the day before.  On one of the sitautions, we had a technician who was able to immediately check Open Manage, which did not report any alerts nor did it report any information in the logs.

Has anyone else seen any kind of false reports?

Still trying to troubleshoot some alerts generated by SNMP monitored objects on a couple servers.  It appears as if SNMP is timing out.  Using SNMP v1 and will probably try SNMP v2 to see if that resolves the issue.
