We are using GFI FAXmaker version 14.3.
It is installed on a Windows 2003 server and we are using a Brooktrout TRxStream Board.
We have an application that creates reports and then sends the fax to our client through faxmaker. We are receiving messages that there has been a handshaking error but when we contacted the client to see if they actually received the fax they did. Sometimes more than once. This is happening randomly to different clients and we have been getting these messages for some time but have only recently been made aware that the client is actually receiving these.

Any ideas?

Generally speaking, handshaking errors indicate a breakdown of communication between the two fax devices. In the majority of cases, these result from line quality issues at the sender, recipient or some point in between.
Things that can cause quality issues are sharing of fax lines with voice equipment or other fax machines, electro-magnetic interference on the lines themselves or introduced via couplers/splitters, faxing over a voice over IP line, DSL lines (in particular, DSL with no filters in use), poor quality cabling and/or loose connections, etc. Essentially, anything that would degrade the quality of the phone line in use.

If your intended recipient gets the fax multiple times, it sounds that FAXmaker is performing its retry attempts that should by default be set at 3.  Although they may receive the fax, it may be an error encountered during the end of the transmission that could have affecting the fax job.  FAXmaker then, after receiving the handshaking error, is going to try again until it gets a success return or ends the number of retry attempts selected, whichever comes first.

We're in the same boat here, we are running GFI 14.3, using a Brooktrout card.
The lines are clean, there are 8 dedicated lines, and we're less than 1 KM from the C.O.

Be we are seeing regular handshake failures on sends, this is causing us a great deal of difficulty particularly when multiple faxes are sent to authorise wire transfers to agents.  If the bank dosn't notice the duplication, we can send triple payments to agents.

Any thing we can do on the server side to make it ignore closing handshake errors?

I would suggest upgrading to the latest build of GFI FAXmaker 14 and upgrading your drivers for the TR1034 board.  If issues persist, we can go about testing in the Diagnostic tool for this board provided by Dialogic.

Once you upgrade to the latest build of GFI FAXmaker 14, you can open a new case here: www.gfi.com/supportform if handshaking failures continue.

Another option you may consider is setting the retry attempts to be 0 under lines/devices in the GFI FAXmaker configuration.

We're experiencing the same issue; we've just upgrade to build 20090625.  How do we upgrade the drivers for the Brooktrout TR1034?  Your documentation for FaxMaker installation recommends we use the driver provided with the Faxmaker software, not the Brooktrout driver CD, are you saying we should obtain the latest drivers from Brooktrout's site?

Yes, still an issue.  I'm just trying to get clarification on how we should be updating our drivers.

You can simply upgrade the drivers for the TR1034 board by stopping the GFI FAXmaker services, navigating to the Faxmaker\brooktrout directory and run the brooktrout_tr1034.exe.  You want to first backup any telephony configurations if using a digital board by navigating within the current brooktrout\tr1034... directory to find both a btcall.cfg and callctrl.cfg file.  Save these two files, perform your upgrade, and overlap these files after upgrade if necessary to the same path.
