Hi, Some emails go to the middlequeue folder. Do it means these emails have virus? Regards. Kenneth.

The MiddleQueue folder is part of the system which moves quarantined emails from the scanning engine to the process which actions the quarantined emails (stores emails in the quarantined database, sends notifications etc). The emails in this folder are encrypted for security purposes.

We occasionally see e-mails with Office 2007 attachments end up in the Middle Queue folder as RDT files. (They are hardly encrypted; you can open them with notepad.) I put a shortcut to the Middle Queue on my desktop so I can check it once a day to see if we've lost any legitimate e-mails. If I find one, I change the file extension to txt and drop it in the pickup folder on our Exchange server.

Removing any file from the MiddleQueue folder will result in having the MiddleLayer functionality in an inconsistent state. No files should be removed from this folder. If an email contains any blocked attachments/viruses these should end up in the Quarantine Store. Approve items from here. Emails are automatially moved to the quarantine and should reside only a few minutes in the MiddleQueue folder. The only folder that you can monitor is the FailedMails folder, or you can monitor it through the MailSecurity Web Interface .. Realtime Monitor

@Ianb - Even if these messages do not appear in the quarantine? These are legitimate messages, not findable anywhere in the GFI user interface, and have anxious end users howling at me. - Joe

Files should not be left in the MiddleQueue directory. Please ensure that your Quarantine is working correctly. I also suggest you delete the Message Queues found in the MSMQ service. These are: midlayerqueue@0 midlayerqueue@1 midlayerqueue@2 midlayerqueue@3 midlayerqueue@4 midlayerqueue@recovery Also if you do so then you will need to manually empty the MiddleQueue directory.

You can find them in the following: Control Panel...Administrative Tools...Computer Management Then expand: Services and Applications, Message Queuing...Private Queues Most probably you will see that in midlayerqueue@recovery the 'Number of Messages' is high. This will be due to the fact that MailSecurity will try to find the items but fails to find the file in the middlequeue folder. Thus they will be moved to the recovery queue.

Please see my post re: Emails with Office 2007 attachments missing , this may be the same issue. Try this To get the email re processed, I opened the *.rdt file in a text editor and changed: Content-Type: application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document to Content-Type: application/msword in this example it is a word attachment. (powerpoint = vnd.ms-powerpoint) Save the file with a *.txt extension and drop into my mail Pickup folder. it then gets Quarantined as *.docx zip attachment that I can release. Regards ICT

I'm not seeing any RDT files being encrypted in the MiddleQueue folder. Nor am I seeing any "inconsistent state" problems by editing legit files so they can be resubmitted to Pickup. The common issue seems to be Office 2007 files not being able to be handled correctly by GFI. Can we please get a patch for this?

I have this reported as a bug and have been told that a fix is on the way early August. Again this appears to be a MS bug not been able to handle Office 2007 attachments. Again if I edit the rdt file FROM: Content-Type: application/vnd.openxmlformats-officedocument.wordprocessingml.document TO: Content-Type: application/msword Then change the ext from *.rdt to *.txt and drop into my pickup folder, MS will then pick it up and Qtine it, I can then release it as a legit mail. If I do nothing they will never get processed and users will start complaiing about missing mail, thats how I discovered it in the first place, all happened since that latest build. Come on GFI when is this going to be fixed???????

This issue has been fixed in the latest MSEC10 build 20090819 just uploaded. More information on this build is available here: http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID003627
