Hi all,

I saw this issue mentioned several times in the past without a satisfactory resolution.

When I open the whitelist properties box, then close it, config.mdb will have increased in size from 1 to 4 megs. This happens whether or not I have made any changes or whether I have selected save apply or cancel.

I have emptied the whitelist and imported a new list to no effect.

The folder and the file are both in the anti-virus exclusion list.

Prior to my discovery of this, the file had swelled to 2GB with all the expected loss of data and failure. I can run the ODBC Data Sources repair tool, and bring it down to appx. 1.5 meg. I have also done the repair or compaction using the jet tools, and the .NET functions. All have the same result - the file starts at 1.5 meg, then starts swelling from there until compacted again.

Any ideas?

which version and build of MailEssentials are you using?
also, how many entries are currently in your

- whitelist?
- custom blacklist?
- keyword list?

keyword checking is not is use
keyword whitelist (body) is not in use
keyword whitelist (subject) has 4 entries

IP whitelist has 1 entry

I have been seeing simular oddities with the MDB files since version 9, (currently running 14.0.20090408)
Most times with up to version 12 it was the config.mdb and occasionally the userlist.mdb, most recently it is just my userlist.mdb.
I have compacted within the last 30 days to 640k, it is now 537MB (date of compact was 5/20/2009) (there are are less than 600 users)

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Yeah, I don't think this is a new thing. It only came to my attention when the file hit 2GB and crapped out. My upgrade from v.12 to v.14 was driven by this issue, but that has not resolved it.

I have a hunch that there is some issue in the XML engine, particularly when importing and exporting email addresses that include XML reserved characters such as an ampersand. I also think there is some conflict in the rendering of data from the namespace values, but I don't know enough to resolve it.

Since the amount of entries you refer to above is from my earlier answer to your question about how many entries I have; I would have to say that I currently have a remarkably similar amount.

Any chance that GFI could start storing the data within the config.mdb, userlist.mdb, whitelist.mdb and any other bloody mdb that GFI is using and say store them in SQL Server (or express for those that can't afford the license). Would provide a great deal more versatility, in some instances wouldn't need the sync agent, because two systems could utilize the same database. we wouldn't have to take GFI offline everytime we needed to perform maintenance on any one of the many mdb files sitting on the local system.

Gene,

I agree that the robustness of SQL Server has some attraction, particularly in a multinode setup, but there is nothing so complex or demanding about the config file that the existing Access/Jet db engine should not be able to handle it. There is something wrong with the data being placed into each record that is blowing up the table, and this should be addressed in the current model instead of trying to migrate their way out of a thicket.

I was not necessarily thinking it was their code, but the way older access databases have a tendancy to go astray. Especially since we have seen it persist through multiple major revisions of their code.

Sure, that's always a possibility; but code revisions do not necessarily include all code. I don't know how granular their modules are, but it is not hard to imagine the specific modules/functionsdealing with table reads and writes, and XML parsing surviving any number of upgrades unexamined and untouched.

Also, it may all be a moot point since GFI's interest in this thread and this issue seems to have vanished into the ether.
