My ISP decided to switch their network around and upon configuring our email servers we discovered the new IP's are contained on SORBS block lists. I spent a few days chasing down how to get removed from SORBS and have had nothing but total frustration and disgust dealing with their 'robot'.

Why oh WHY could GFI possibly be sponsoring this horrid excuse for an RBL ?

My question, has anyone been successful getting off SORBS and if so, how??

Hi,

Please review the following link with the FAQ for SORBS. In these instructions there is a section (section 11) that explains what to do in case you are listed in this system:
http://www.us.sorbs.net/faq/

Hope this information helps.

Regards,

Been there, and several links like it. SORBS has decided to block entire netblocks of the Internet with no regard for segments of those blocks that have been carved out for legitimate businesses. With Google, I also find that our shop is not alone. There are countless blogs and stories of people suffering the same discrimination. Not to say one doesn't exist but we have yet to find a success story of someone getting removed from their horrid system. GFI should not have their reputation associated with such nonsense.

Lol,

looks like they are not only sponsor but they are owner! I am sure this post will vanish soon proving GFI as the master of censorship!

http://it.slashdot.org/story/09/11/04/157249/SORBS-Blocklist-Reportedly-Sold-For-451K

http://jedsmith.org/?p=90

Michelle Sullivan, administrator of the infamous and reviled SORBS e-mail blocklist (see my previous lament on them), is on the record as bragging about the sale of SORBS in a private, invite-only IRC channel.
[08:41:22] <Michelle> Woot! .. SORBS is now owned by GFi Software Development Ltd
[08:42:02] <Michelle> for a cool half a mil
According to Michelle’s LinkedIn profile, she currently works for North Carolina-based GFI Software as an engineering director — beginning sometime last month. GFI is currently displayed on the SORBS site as a sponsor, a decision apparently unpopular among their users.
I have contacted GFI twice for comment, but have received no response.
This information comes on the heels of Michelle announcing the imminent closure of SORBS in July, citing failure of one of the hosts to uphold their contract. This imminent closure never happened, however, even after Michelle touted SORBS for a sale.
SORBS is officially “For Sale” should anyone wish to purchase it as a going concern, but failing that and failing to find alternative hosting for a 42RU rack in the Brisbane area of Queensland Australia SORBS will be shutting down permanently in 28 days, on 20th July 2009 at 12 noon.
Assuming Michelle is referencing Australian dollars, this sale equates to roughly $451,400 USD. GFI, makers of the MailEssentials suite, lists two United States military branches, Coca-Cola, Toyota, and Fujitsu among its customers.
Edit (1:40 p.m.): Another person who witnessed this conversation has come forward and corroborated it — providing timestamps and Michelle’s nickname as well. The source goes on to indicate that Michelle is fairly upset about the information being divulged outside of where it was said.
Edit 2 (3:44 p.m.): Updated slightly and corrected GFi spelling to GFI.

This was a pretty awful experience but I was finally able to get our systems off SORBS lists.

I'll spare the lengthy rant and just say I had to pose as an upstream net block owner then supply appropriate documentation in order to succeed. On the plus side, I'm sure some other SORBS victims were opened up too. So far so good.

This is funny .... I have been 'a happy SORBS user' ever since GFI have started using sorbs in the botnet / zombie check. This feature does block a bunch of spam which used to go through in the past.

In a sense, I am happy that GFI have acquired sorbs - this should make it easier to integrate sorb's functionality into MailEssentials. Having said that, I look forward to hearing GFI's stand on the matter.

GFI Software has acquired SORBS, one of the premier anti-spam reputation services on the Internet.

GFI currently uses SORBS in GFI MailEssentials, and so there is instant synergy with this strategic move.

GFI is now actively developing plans for the future of SORBS, including SORBS 2.0 and methods to improve SORBS data and responsiveness.

Having a reputation service within GFI will allow us to provide a better service to our customers and to greatly enhance our standing in the anti-spam community as well as give us opportunities to report on spam trends and analyze real-time feeds in ways we have not previously been able to. We are very excited about this acquisition and look forward to the benefits in the months and years to come.

The creator of SORBS, Michelle Sullivan, has joined the company.

Well davbus, your remarks have yet to be deleted, but mine sure were.

I will rephrase them more charitably -

Unless there is a missing Picasso hidden among SORBS' papers, GFI hoped to acquire three major assets: The accuracy and integrity of the SORBS database, the skill and reputation of its manager, and the quaility and high regard of the SORBS good name.

It is my opinion that GFI would have been better served purchasing a bag of wet sand, and investing the difference in Enron shares.

Regards,

Len Agoado

I hope by taking SORBS onboard that GFI improve the service a thousand-fold. My clients too have fallen victim of the listing policies in the past. Example, an entire range of BT IPs was listed as "dynamic", and it took almost a month to get the erroneous entries removed because of the requirement for third-party involvement. I'm sure businesses have gone bust for less reason than this.

I cannot recommend the SORBS listings to anyone.

My view may change if GFI's control makes the necessary improvements in accuracy and customer service and removes the "bullying" language from the FAQ.

Considering SORBS was a "non-profit entity" with "no assets", was half-a-million dollars a good investment?
