ufs -> AVG Anti-Virus Hanging Exchange (27.Mar.2009 8:09:28 AM)

Recently I ran into a problem that I eventually tracked down to the AVG Anti-Virus engine in MailSecurity 10 (build 20080614).  It concerned e-mails coming in from a business partner with a PDF attachment.  It affected only some PDF files, not all, and I've never quite figured out what it was about those particular PDF files.

The symptom was that when AVG encountered the attachment, it locked up Exchange's "Messages Pending Submission" queue and messages would just collect in that queue.  The message itself would end up in the FailedMails folder.  The only way to get mail flowing again was to reboot the Exchange server, and everything would be fine until AVG encountered that message in the information store again, and we'd repeat the process.  BitDefender and Norman had no problem whatsoever with these attachments.

Once we finally determined that it was AVG that was triggering this issue, I simply disabled that scanning engine and everything went back to normal.

Just for the record, my AVG details are:
Scanner engine version: 1.6.8276
Scanner engine release date: 2009/03/11 14:00:00
Virus database version: 270.11.11/1997
Virus database release date: 2009/03/12 10:38:00

The problem started on 2009/03/13 which is after AVG updated.  I guess it took a day or two for the right combination to hit.

My question is, has anyone else has experienced this problem?

Hello ufs,

We released a patch which targets an integration problem we had discovered between MSEC and AVG. Please check out this forum post:

http://forums.gfi.com/Important_update_for_GFI_MailSecurity%92s_Grisoft_AVG_anti-virus_engine/m_900774638/tm.htm

Can you let us know if the problem persists please?

Nicholas,

I had already installed the patch when the problem surfaced.  When I was troubleshooting the problem I removed the patch but the problem didn't go away.  There seemed to be no difference between having the patch installed and not having it installed.

Are you of the opinion that this patch was specifically designed to address this problem?

Hi,

The patch is designed to address an integration problem between a new Grisoft AVG virus scanning engine and GFI MailSecurity. A side affect of this problem is that GFI MailSecurity fails when scanning certain pdf files.

I would recommend that you try re-installing the patch, by replacing the file and running the VBScript included with the patch.

Should the problem persist, we would need to investigate further to identify what is causing the pdfs to be blocked. Please follow the procedure at http://forums.gfi.com/Version_and_Build_Information/m_900735293/tm.htm to generate a set of troubleshooting files and submitting these to GFI support.

Thank you.

Nicholas,

My bad.  I didn't read the patch date closely.  I assumed you were referring to the 02/25 patch and now I see there's a 03/13 patch.

I'll apply the 03/13 patch ASAP and report back.

Thanks!

Nicholas,

Patch was installed yesterday and AVG was reactivated.  Everything has been fine for 24 hours so I think it's safe to wrap this up.  Thanks for your help!  (I'll read things more closely next time!)
