ki4jil -> Help Deploying Office 2007 (21.Jan.2009 5:49:50 PM)

I have never used Languard to deploy custom software.  I am trying to deploy Office 2007 with it.  Is this possible and what is the best way to do it?

Thanks

JoeV -> RE: Help Deploying Office 2007 (23.Jan.2009 4:52:53 PM)

Are you deploying the standard office 2007 configuration, or are you pushing a custom .msi??

either way, it would probably be best for something that large to put the files on a network share, write a batch script that:
1. maps a drive to the share and
2. installs the software from the share
then use GFI to push the batch script.  that way the .mst and all the .cab files dont get lost in transit :)

hope it helps

Office 2007 can be deployed with LANguard NSS, but you will need to do some prep work first.

Step zero: you are licensed properly, right? You will need a license key and volume license media. You can download both from https://licensing.microsoft.com

Step one: Read the documents found here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/office/desktop/default.aspx.

Step two: copy the volume license CD to a network share (I call mine Office2007. Don't use spaces in your folder names.)

Step three: run \\network\Office2007\setup.exe /admin to create a customization file. This is where you will put in your license key, company name, etc. Save the resulting MSP as "\\network\Office2007\updates\1_Customization.msp." You must save it in the updates folder, and you should make sure that whatever name you give it will make it the first file found in the folder. Otherwise it won't work.

If you are installing Office 2007 and Office 2003 on the same machines, don't install them to the same directory or some programs won't work properly.

Step four - download the latest full file Service Pack (SP1 at the time of this writing). The file you download is an executable, run it with the /extract switch and save the expanded MSP file to the updates folder under Office2007 with the name 2_ServicePack.msp.

Step five - if you are up to it - go to http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/current.aspx and view all the security updates that apply to Office 2007 + your service pack. Download them, extract the MSP files with the /extract switch, and copy those MSP files to your Updates subfolder with names like 3_Word.msp, 4_Excel.msp. You will have to get creative with names.

Updates that you deploy with the software only apply to new installations. They will not patch existing Office 2007 computers in your organization. But that's why you bought LANguard NSS.

Step six - you can now run \\network\office2007\setup.exe - it will find and run the first MSP file in the updates folder for use as a customization file, and it will run the other MSP files in that folder as patches. Always be sure to fully qualify the \\network\office2007\setup.exe file name and path, because if you just type "setup.exe" your computer will think you mean the Windows setup.exe, and you will get a confusing error message as a result.

You might also consider downloading other Office add-ons, like the Save As PDF feature, and building that into your customization MSP.

Good luck.

Thanks a lot for the input.  I will give it a shot.

Installing applications using LANguard is quite simple.  Major applications such as Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, McAfee and more come with their own service tools called "configuration wizards".  Once you have the configuration wizard for your product installed on you system, you can then configure it to auto insert things such as the serial number or other items.  After you are done using it, you simply bundle all these files into a single folder using an extractor program such as Winzip Self Extractor.  Next you simply push it out using LANguard as a .exe single file with no parameters and you are done.

With LANguard 9, you should be able to uninstall older apps that you are not using.

That's it....

mblinde -> RE: Help Deploying Office 2007 (30.Jun.2009 9:42:13 AM)

I know this is an old thread but I'm following it for our first use of the app deployment feature in LANGuard. I have followed the steps mentioned before by Joe S but I'm encountering the following problem. I push the application to the test workstation then a application popup comes up saying "Setup cannot find the required setup controller file. Either there was a network error, an error reading from the CD, DVD, or other installation media, or a problem with the package you downloaded.". Does anyone have any ideas or helpful tips?

joestern -> RE: Help Deploying Office 2007 (30.Jun.2009 9:45:17 AM)

@Mblinde - are you using the volume license media?

mblinde -> RE: Help Deploying Office 2007 (30.Jun.2009 9:52:35 AM)

Yes, volume license media installed on a shared network location and I'm using the fully qualified name. I'm stumped

Did you use any custom switches or anything not mentioned in the steps above?

joestern -> RE: Help Deploying Office 2007 (30.Jun.2009 10:21:38 AM)

Does it work if you run setup from the workstation (i.e. without LanGuard NSS)?

mblinde -> RE: Help Deploying Office 2007 (30.Jun.2009 10:33:00 AM)

Just launched it and so far it is running silently without prompt just by running the setup.exe from \\servername\sharename\path\. No errrors

Program installed silently as requested, no prompts, everything configured as it should be.

I'm at a loss what is different between this and installing it from GFI.

DrewE -> RE: Help Deploying Office 2007 (30.Jun.2009 10:56:26 AM)

Are you using the Advanced Options to specify credentials to deploy the software with?

mblinde -> RE: Help Deploying Office 2007 (30.Jun.2009 11:02:25 AM)

Yes and I'm using the domain admin account to the domain in which both the test machine and the server are both members of.

mblinde -> RE: Help Deploying Office 2007 (30.Jun.2009 12:35:25 PM)

I'm trying to find any reason why this error would occur only when doing this from GFI. Directly from the PC there is no problem.

DrewE -> RE: Help Deploying Office 2007 (30.Jun.2009 12:37:27 PM)

There are some log files typically stored on the machine you are installing the software on under C:\Windows\Patches. Can you examine these files and tell us if you see any errors? Please paste any relevant extracts from these logs and we can help you decipher what they mean.

mblinde -> RE: Help Deploying Office 2007 (30.Jun.2009 1:35:16 PM)

Here is the log file just running the setup.exe as is full path, no other accounts then the system account. No matter what I try I get the same prompt every time.
