The database the messages are stored in would depend on what you prefer. We include Firebird database support with GFI MailArchiver or the messages can be sent to a SQL database. These messages would not be stored in a flat file. The binary files could possibly be altered if someone had unrestricted access to the database and knew how to run the queries required to find the message and make changes/delete. We do have built in auditing features in GFI MailArchiver 5 that can tell you what is being accessed that may help you out a lot.
