fireburns -> Trojan & Ececutable Scanner update failing (16.Apr.2008 3:32:45 PM)

All,

We have MSEC 10 build 20070410 installed on a Win2k3 SP2 server which also houses our Exchange 2k3 instance.  The server is behind a firewall, and the firewall is configured to allow traffic from the mail server to http://update.gfi.com and http://update.gfisoftware.com.  A/V updates (BitDefender, Kaspersky, etc.) are downloading and installing OK, but Trojan & Executable Scanner update files are not, and evidently have not been for quite some time now (on the order of 8 months(!)).  Surfing to the previously referenced URLs from the mail server does indeed give us a login/authentication prompt, so traffic is properly routing.

Any other ideas as to what might be going wrong?  Our product is showing as licensed in the configuration manager...

Hello fireburns,

I don't think you have to be worried about this.
My guess is that the 'date stamp' on your Trojan & Executable Scanner equals the date you installed MailSecurity 10 build 20070410.
The reason why it hasn't updated ever since is simply because no updates have been made available. This does however not mean that we do not update the Trojan & Executable scanner when necessary.
So far there haven't been reports of any Trojans or Executables that were not detected by the Scanner and thus we did not have to make updates available.

Kind regards,

I have had the same problem: I couldn't get any updates and thought the problem was with firewall. But you say there is no update available as for now? That doesn't seem secure then if your trojan database isn't updated often...

Hello kotto,

Due to the way the Trojan and Executable Scanner has been designed (it scans the files and performs reverse engineering in order to retrieve the APIs and function calls present in the file. It will check their rank and log them against an encrypted database) it has not been necessary to release updates for this module. Rest assured, this does not mean that your security has been compromised. If Trojans and Executables with malicious intentions are found that are not detected by this module we will of course release updates as soon as possible.

Kind regards,
