ORIGINAL: Sven Berger Personally, I have tested this, created my own rules in EVM7.1 in two different processing rules. I then renamed one processing rule (so that the EVM8 installation would not overwrite my own custom ones), and did the upgrade. Both Rulesets were correctly imported from my EVM 7.1 installtion. When you uninstall EVM 7.1, it leaves the installation folder "Eventsmanager7" in the "Program Files\GFI" directory with all the configurationsettings. EVM 8 will attempt to make a clean install in a newly created "Eventsmanager8" directory. You must make sure that you install EVM8 into the EVM 7.1 directory and all the settings from the previous installation will be retained. Hi Sven, Thanks. It works but by uninstalling 7.1, I had problems. Once upgraded to build 0080318, I launched the application and was asked for username and password. I'm puzzled here though. Here's what I did to get it to work.... 1. Reinstall back 7.1 2. Confirmed that all my ruleset and other settings were still there. 3. Upgraded to build 0080318 and into the Program Files\GFI\EventsManager7 directory. So far so good. Will inform if I do still encounter any problem. Hopefully not. Thanks for your help again.

Hi mfhjek0, I have checked with the QM department regarding this case. Basically the issue has been identified, but a solution is still being worked on. There are two "official" ways to upgrade from 7.1 to 8. Either you change the installation path from 8 to 7.1 when you installing the version 8, or you make a clean install and chose to import the configuration from within the EVM8 UI. Your case is specific and these two scenarios are the cause of the problem. 2 days ago, the Agent handling your case was informed that the issue was found and that a solution will be made available soon. In short, there wasn't that much that we could present to you at that point. However, i apologise for leaving you in the dark completely. Rest assured that the agent will contact you as soon as there is a solution available.

Thanks Sven. I was forced to drop back to 7.1 in order to get back up and running. In looking for the "official" way to upgrade, in the Ver 8 Installation Manual I found: "Upgrading from version 7.0 or Version 7.1 of GFI EventsManager to GFI EventsManager version 8.0 is fully supported." However, I was not able to find any instructions about having to change the installation path, or warnings about losing my configuration settings when upgrading to ver 8. I would like to suggest the next build documenation more clearly explain the upgrade process, and admit that previous configuration settings are not kept, and cannot be imported from Ver 7.1.

Hi mfhjek0, I should stress that both problems that are described here do not apply to GFi Software in general. 1. Having to change the installation path in order to retain the installation: This is an oversight on our behalf and comes from the fact that the Eventsmanager 7 installation folder was actually named "Eventsmanager 7". It should have been called "Eventsmanager". If you look at all the other GFi Software, there are usually no version numbers in the installationfolder. Examples are: "MailEssentials", "mailArchiver", "ContentSecurity", etc. We have a generic upgrade procedure and as long as the usual pre-conditions are met, the upgrade will go smootly. Unfortunately, in the case of Eventsmanager 8, one of the usual pre-conditions was not met, and we did not realise this when the manual went to print. However, If a customer has made the upgrade without changeing the installationpath, he simply needs to uninstall EVM8 and re-install it using the amended installation path. 2. The fact that your upgrade did not work, even though you have amended the installationpath is a specific problem to that one machine. There is currently no other case like yours that had been reported to us. That's why our escalation team have to work on a taylor-made solution and could not present you with a ready-made fix. We have successfully upgraded dozens of EVM 7 to EVM 8 TestServers including our own servers without any problems. I know for a fact that many more customers have also made this successful transition, but I have no numbers on this. Therefore a statement that "previous configuration settings can not be kept" would be untrue to say and to admit. But I certainly agree with you that the documentation on the upgrade-path, the "official" path so to speak, should be correctly included in the documentation and I will certainly request this update to the documentation asap. Hope this post has helped to clear up a few things.

Sven, Would it be possible to post the upgrade path instructions, or let me know when the documention has been updated? At some point I would like to try and upgrade again. In the meantime, can you tell me the path to download the EM7 ReportPack? thanks

Hi mfhjek0, EVM7 can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.gfi.com/eventsmanager7rp.exe. Alternatively, the upgradepath is as follows: - uninstall EVM 7.1 - start the EVM 8 installation. - on the page that displays the installation folder as "c:\programm files\Eventsmanager 8", change the path to "c:\programm files\Eventsmanager 7".
