Sven Berger -> RE: Upgrading To Version 8 Problems - Overlaying of Custom Rulesets and Queries (30.Apr.2008 8:28:35 AM)

Hi mfhjek0, I should stress that both problems that are described here do not apply to GFi Software in general. 1. Having to change the installation path in order to retain the installation: This is an oversight on our behalf and comes from the fact that the Eventsmanager 7 installation folder was actually named "Eventsmanager 7". It should have been called "Eventsmanager". If you look at all the other GFi Software, there are usually no version numbers in the installationfolder. Examples are: "MailEssentials", "mailArchiver", "ContentSecurity", etc. We have a generic upgrade procedure and as long as the usual pre-conditions are met, the upgrade will go smootly. Unfortunately, in the case of Eventsmanager 8, one of the usual pre-conditions was not met, and we did not realise this when the manual went to print. However, If a customer has made the upgrade without changeing the installationpath, he simply needs to uninstall EVM8 and re-install it using the amended installation path. 2. The fact that your upgrade did not work, even though you have amended the installationpath is a specific problem to that one machine. There is currently no other case like yours that had been reported to us. That's why our escalation team have to work on a taylor-made solution and could not present you with a ready-made fix. We have successfully upgraded dozens of EVM 7 to EVM 8 TestServers including our own servers without any problems. I know for a fact that many more customers have also made this successful transition, but I have no numbers on this. Therefore a statement that "previous configuration settings can not be kept" would be untrue to say and to admit. But I certainly agree with you that the documentation on the upgrade-path, the "official" path so to speak, should be correctly included in the documentation and I will certainly request this update to the documentation asap. Hope this post has helped to clear up a few things.
