it's not exactly in the budget to upgrade... we bought this in May of 2005... I can't believe GFI doesn't have a workaround for this bug...

Hello pcsdallas, The issue is not a bug, but rather that MailSecurity 8.1 is an old product and it was not designed to work with these new file formats. Regards,

I'm running version 10.1 - I had to give up on the "block all except this list rule". I was getting too many things in the quarantine. For about 30-50 percent of the emails I found in the quarantine, it was a case of GFI's product not being able to say "Oh, this is a GIF or JPG embedded in the email." Instead it says "something is embedded - it has no filename." Revert back to the "block this list rule" and I think you'll be OK. If you'd like a comprehensive list of extensions, let me know and I'll email them to you. Jan

unfortunately, the block this list rule doesn't work right for this situation. I don't really care what GFI says... it's a BUG. I am currently using the block this list rule ONLY... .xlsx, .docx, etc STILL don't get through.

Hi pcsdallas, Try the following: - Browse to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GFI FAX & VOICE\GFIAV\Ext\AttachChecker]
- Change the dword value 'BlockFiles_NoNameBeforeExt' to '0'. (You would need to create the dword value manually, if this does not exist)
- Restart the GFI services and the IIS Admin service.
Alternativly, use the notes workaround documented in http://kbase.gfi.com/showarticle.asp?id=KBID001900 (please check the notes section also) ---EDIT--- Arranged step 2.

Nicks, Thank you for this solution... HOWEVER... The Dword value was already set to "1"... I changed it to "0" and everything now works like a champ. I am still a bit disturbed why your tech support department would recommend that I upgrade ($1200+++) to resolve this issue. That's a bad business tactic. Any idea how to resolve my other outstanding issue? http://forums.gfi.com/MailSec_8%251_Cannot_Approve_Quarantined_Items/m_900750640/tm.htm Thanks!

pcsdallas, You are correct - The dword value should be changed to '0' (I will edit my post to reflect this) The version of MailSecurity that you are using is rather old - making it difficult to support. There will be a point in time where you will need to upgrade, since newer threats and newer file-types may not be fully supported by the version you are using. I will answer your other issue in the same post.

Oh, I'm well aware of the upgrade issue. The main problem is that there is no budget for an upgrade in 2007. Thank you for the help!
