Hi, V12.0 build 20070112. My users complain that when Out of Office is on they get more spam - does anyone have an opinion on this? Cheers, NEIL

A lot will depend on the exact way you configure GFI-ME to handle spam. I can't confirm from my direct experience as I run all my spam through a quarantine, but I believe that if you use the "send to users Junk E-mail folder" what actually happens is that the mail is delivered as normal, but has a header set to indicate that it is spam. On arrival in the mailbox, the message will be moved to the junk e-mail folder using the mailbox rules but it may still be processed for out-of-office messages. If GFI ME processes the out-of-office messages like standard outbound mail then it would whitelist the original spamming address, meaning that subsequent mail that recycled the address would no longer be classified as spam. While many spam engines create new addresses for each message, there are also plenty that use the same address on multiple messages so it's possible that following an Out-of-office sesssion your users might see more unclassifed spam in their Inbox. Perhaps someone from GFI can confirm whether out-of-office messages are ignored for whitelisting purposes and, if not, add it as a feature request. Regards, tt2

Hi, GFI MailEssentials does not regard an Out of Office email as a normal outbound email. Therefore should a spam email be recieved, and an Out of Office is sent. The Recipient of the Out of Office email is not added to the AutoWhitelist. The text used in the Subject is used to identify out of office replies. This setting is found in this registry value. NOTE: Only one value is supported HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GFI\ME12\Config STRING: 'awx_outofoffice' Thank you

This forum rocks Mark. I'm learning and learning and learning. What if someone uses a non-English email client? In our Office we all use Dutch clients except one. The Dutch Out of Office reply is "Automatisch antwoord bij afwezigheid:". Shouldn't I change this in the registry? And what about that one client who has an English client. Can you add multiple entries seperated by semi-colons?

Thats good to hear azivo :) Should your Out of Office reply have a subject "Automatisch antwoord bij afwezigheid:", then you should change the String Value mentioned in my post above to ""Automatisch antwoord bij afwezigheid:". No multiple entries are supported at this point, therefore you can only enter one string. We have added your request as a feature request. Thank you

I second this request strongly! MS Office Outlook in a certain language will even by itself generate different Out Of Office subjects. This means that every non-English version of MS Office can generate both native language messages and English messages. I don't know if the client mailbox language on the Exchange server (which is set the first time you log on with Outlook or OWA and based upon that applications language) is the only thing that can change this (I think there's also other logics that affects this), but it's still a fact. It is in other words very common that both English subjects and native subjects exists within the same organization, even if MS Office only exists in a specific language. If this affects the Auto-Whitelist, then it's a quite serious issue!

Just took a look at this regsetting and guess what. After installing the latest build, the setting is default again. So after every install, I have to edit it back to Dutch. Can you correct this problem in the next build please?

Hello Azivo, The mentioned Registry Key indeed 'resets' itself when you upgrade (or re-install) your MailEssentials. I have contacted product management for you and asked them if it is possible to retain this setting. Unfortunately I can not promise that this will be implemented but it is under their attention. Kind regards,
