When I execute the test inside Alerting Options, it works fine.
A protocol trace shows that the test uses:
AUTH gssapi
which works successfully.

However a trace of the actual email alerts shows:

AUTH LOGIN
which is unsuccessful.

Where does GFI EventsManager get the login from for the AUTH LOGIN?

cbillings@njdwsc.com,

Are you using GFI EventsManager with Microsoft Exchange? If so, have you configured SMTP authentication?

Yes I am.
I assume you mean smtp authentication within GFI EventsManager?
I tried that and got the same results. In fact, when I put in credentials for smtp authentication, the test would not go through.

Update.
I change administrator@njdwsc.com
to
njdwsc\administrator
and the test was successful but the alerts are still not going through.
In the status window / Job Activity window, of the Management Console, it says: Source: Processoror Service, Unable to send email message to administrator@njdwsc.com

I have the same problem.  We use Exchange 2003 internally.  I can send the test message to an outside or internal address just fine.  I receive alerts to my internal email account, but when GFI Events Manager tries to send to an external email address it fails.

[Edit]
Nevermind, I got it working.  I just wasn't patient enough after changing the authentication per jdown.
