Mark, as much as I wish it not so...we had failed updates from 12:45PM EST to 2:58PM EST today. When you say it's been rectified, what was the problem? I'm just not sure that it's been fixed.

Thanks,

Darius

We didn't get any failure messages
But we also didn't get any succession messages  (yes they're ticked since the failures)

The changes which we have made to our update servers configuration, might require for you to refresh your DNS Caches.

Thank you

Mark,

Thanks for the followup.
Last failure was on Thursday (3/1).  AV Updates have been successful ever since.

How do I refresh my DNS cache (if that is my problem). I have been watching this thread with interest but hadn't posted here yet. I didn't want to be just another "Me too".

I saw this post this morning and hoped... in vain.

From 12:38 to 12:53 (less than an hour ago) all 4 of my updates failed:
  1. Bit Defender
  2. Email exploit
  3. Trojan & Executable
  4. Norman

Who wishes to clear the gfi.com site their DNS cache immediately, can you please proceed as follows:

1. From the Administrator tools, open DNS 2. From the View menu select "Advanced"
3. Expand "Cached lookups"
4. Expand ".root"
5. Expand ".com"
6. Delete the gfi entry if it exists
7. Delete the gfisoftware entry if it exists 8. Restart the DNS server service.

Let us know if the problem persists once you perform the above.

Hello PRiederer

The last update that was done to the Trojan and Executable scanner is dated:
<2005-06-12-14:00:00>

The last update for the Email Exploit Engine is dated:
<2006-10-19-14:22:00>

You are able to download the updates manually. Please contact support@gfi.com for further information on how this can be done.

Thank you

To my fellow GFI users and GFI staff,

A Post-mortem:
  • The worst period of this issue lasted from 19th February till 7th March 2007 (16 days).
  • There was a fairly consistant pattern - 6pm till 7:30pm GMT (these times are approximate - we won't get picky).
  • It was shown very quickly that from a customer's point of view, the problem was that connection to the update servers were periodically so slow that a timeout event was triggered: Customers proved it, and posted their questions in this thread.
  • Look lads, let's face it.  There were no serious security issues for customers - their GFI servers just got their updates a few hours late.  But let's NOT forget that the real issue here lies with GFI's response to the issue.
  • I believe that GFI should have corrected this problem as soon as it reared it's ugly head.
  • I also believe that customer complaints should NOT be used as the "trigger" to alert GFI technicians that there is a problem.  Surely GFI has monitoring systems for the update servers.
  • As an IT administrator I want to spend as least time as possible with mail security issues: it simply should just work.  So I'm not that interested in WHY all of my GFI servers (in geographically separate parts of the world) were unable to communicate with GFI's update servers at specific periods of the day.  What I am interested in is:
    • Why did it take so long for GFI to resolve the problem?
    • Customers posted very some relevant questions - why weren't these answered?
    • Generally, why were customers kept so much in the dark?

As a final point:  I'd be sacked if I allowed an IT problem to affect our customers for 16 days straight.  It's not so much the issue itself, it rarely is - the erosion of customer confidence it always the most serious casualty.

Yours sincerely,

Rod,
You hit the nail right on the head.
My time would be better spent by working on my own IT issues, in stead of trying to figure out if the update problem is local or at GFI's end.

GFI Staff, please consider letting us know in a timely fashion if there is a problem, either via e-mail or an alert on the forum and what the correction was.

Feb. 14 was the first complant; corrected March 9. I spent too much time troubleshooting at my end and then being left in the dark by GFI !!!!!
Respectfully and not happy,
Charlie

Hello Mark,

I've tried to delete the GFI entry from our 2000 DNS domain, but I got the following error:
The DNS domain cannot be deleted.
The zone does not exist.

Then I decided to clear the whole DNS cache, restarted the DNS Server service and even rebooted the GFI server.

I still get an update error.

There was a failure when checking for Anti-Phishing updates

I will keep you informed of more module update errors.

Hi;

I deleted the cached DNS entries, then restarted the DNS service (which automatically cleared out all the DNS entries anyway). Attached is a PDF of the list of failures since then (Friday, 10:25 BST), so it seems the problem isn't quite as resolved as I'd like.

If no-one else reports ongoing problems, I'll go on the assumption it's an issue at my end!
