Some feature requests/questions - 12.Nov.2006 11:32:31 AM

Hello Mark (and of course others),

I saw passing various questions and requests here.
After some months using ME12, I also have my requests.
Some of them I already saw them passing in the one or other way, but I thought it would be good if I repeat them. Most of the questions is about the logging facilities.

It is possible that my questions are already possible with the current function/options, so tell me if it is this case.

1/ In the actions tab, I would like to choose more than 1 action.
For example tagging AND copiing the e-mail to a seperate folder.
Reason: For some modules, I have set: Only tagging. When I check the logfiles, I see an entry that doesn't seems spam at first sight, so I want to investigate. However, the user already deleted that e-mail, so I can't have a look at that e-mail anymore. When a copy of that e-mail can be found in another folder, I still can investigate.

2/ Logging of the whitelist
For all modules, there is a possibility to log why an e-mail is processed as spam. When I discover an e-mail that isn't recognized as spam, I want to figure out why. Did it pass all modules OR was this address in the whitelist (and was the address manually entered, or automatically).

3/ Logging options (Format, Frequency, Details)
This request is in fact 3 little requests:
* The possiblity to choose the log format. Now it is always comma-seperated. The option to choose also for tab- or semicolon-seperated would be nice.
* Now the logfiles are always growing, and can get really big after some time. Isn't it possible to give the option to start a new logfile every day/week/month/... And then of course a timestamp in the filename.
* Log details: For some modules, it would be nice to have more details why it was denied.
For example:
--> url checking: Which url was found (when there's in an e-mail a "bad" url found, but there are multiple urls in that e-mail.
--> Bayesian: Why, which words or score?

4/ Now a more functional question. In some modules, there are quite some options. I see, for example, the 'header checking' or 'DNS Blacklist' modules. Isn't it possible to split the actions for these?
For example the Header checking:
* The "valid sender domain" is quite acurate, so action would be delete.
* Same for the empty or malformed MIME FROM field.
* However the 'remote images' and some languages causes here some false positives (it seems some people use the wrong character set to compose e-mails?)
Other example DNS Blacklist:
* Some lists are quite hard, and causes often false positives. For these lists tagging would be choosen as action
* Other lists aren't less strict, so can be set as action 'delete'

5/ The custom Variables would be handy for us too
I also like this request :http://forums.gfi.com/Custom_Variables_in_Disclaimers/m_900738040/tm.htm

Kristof

I see this message in 90% of the threads.
No offence, but do you really do something with it, or is it just a standard message?

KristofT,

All requests are forwarded to the Product Manager of GFI MailEssentials. We can not guarantee that your feature requests will be added to the next version, however your suggestion will be reviewed when we design the next version of our product. If the request has been made by many of our customers it will get serious consideration, if not its unlikely to be included in the next version.

Thank you for your cooperation & understanding

I follow this forum already for a month or 2. So I've read already "When many users request this feature ...". But some persons who doesn't follow this forum that often don't know this. They have a problem/question/request. They search on this forum, and see the message that that request is added to the list and they don't post this request anymore, because they think it is already recorded.

The proposal to make the feature request public, so all people can "vote" for it, will be a good idea...
