After a disaster meeting with upper management, the only way our company will consider keeping this product is if we are given SERIOUS discounts on the McAfee & Kaspersky engines. I don't think anyone in this organization will trust Norman/BitDefender ever again. You may as well throw those engines in as a freebie from now on.

Same problem here. Lost about 2 hours of e-mail before we caught it. I just disabled the bitdefender service and the e-mail started coming through. I don't know why they are saying you need to restart the services.
Maybe MailSecurity should incorporate some sort of mail heartbeat function and send a page when it fails.

Not much better than a reboot IMHO ...

Almost 3 hours since i disabled BitDefender. Rebooted the gateway, restarted the services, manual updates do nothing and no automatic updates have come through yet (for BitDefender, Kaspersky has updated).
Any idea when the guessing will end and an actual fix provided?

Message we received from GFI hours after the problem started:
We have just discovered an issue in the latest BitDefender definition engine which is included in GFI MailSecurity where it is wrongly detecting all emails as corrupted zip file. We strongly suggest that you disable totally the BitDefender engine from configuration.
We are looking into this issue and we would like to apologize for the inconvenience caused.
Please note that new definition files have been uploaded on the update servers which do not have this problem.

I received an email from GFI tech support with the same steps as Nick's. I rebooted my gateway server and BitDefender is now working again but MSEC was unable to manual update a new signature file as there isn't any available. My guess is that GFI needed to be rebooted in order for the BitDef files to work...nightmares of MS patches...I hope this does not ever happen again or else there will be some major software evals...

I followed the steps listed to "fix" this problem. I'm not sure why we always have to do reboots or restarting services, but so far the fix seems to work. i'll be keeping a close eye on this today.
BTW, we had used Symantec stuff for a year. I hated it. It was very intrusive and caused all types of problems for us. I dumped it after our license ran out. I like GFI, though this was a major problem today. rebooting a mail server is not what I want to do in the middle of a work day. Fortunately for us, ours rebooted within 7 minutes. I think that's a new record for us.
I would still be interested to know if the problem was with GFI or BitDefender. Or, was it a combination? We have Bitdefender on all our workstations and have not had any problems.

The update we got at 8:02 CST is the latest. It didn't seem to take effect until we rebooted the server. So far, it's working fine again.
Speaking of rebooting, I find it troublesome that most updates to MS or ME require me to reboot. I never have much luck simply restarting IIS. I guess that is the cost of having software working on such a low level.

If that would still be impossible to do, go to the MailSecurity configuration -> right click on General and select properties. Change to the VSAPI tab, and disable VSAPI. From Task Manager, wait till the process gfiscan.exe stops (should take less then 20 seconds). When it stops, enable VSAPI once again. This will avoid having to restart the Exchange Information Store.

Problem is, whenever I contact GFI, non-vital issue or not, their tech support guys tend to get that "SIGH, What do you want now?" attitude and treat me like I am a pimple on the rear.
I used to see GFI as a well-managed tech firm, but the view seems more like a garage-based startup when the chips get tough.
It's hard for me to rely on a bunch of tech guys just slapping code together when clients, money, and jobs are on the line. This is business, folks, not a sideline Blog host.
I'm going to have a hard time going into a management meeting to discuss software/upgrade budgets and holding GFI to the same light as I did before.

Hmm, seems to be working here again (no notification of any updates though). I notice now since the second restart of the IIS Admin service and co. that the AVCORE is a March 1st 2005 build. Prior to restarting the service again, it was a September 2004 build. Maybe something went wrong with the update to the AVCORE build?

THERE IS SOMETHING THAT REALLY WORRIES ME... FORTUNATELY I HAVE DETECTED THE PROBLEM BY MYSELF TESTING MY NEW GMAIL ACCOUNT... BUT SHOULD I DO WHAT THEY SAY AND GO TO BED WONDERING WHAT MAY HAPPEN THIS NIGTH WHILE I AM NOT HERE TO CHECK IT?... NO WAY... WHAT I HAVE TO DO IS LEAVE DISABLED AND TRUST IN MY NORMAN ENGINE...
DON'T YOU SEE, GFI GUYS, THAT THIS IS TOTALLY INADMISIBLE THAT AN ANTIVIRUS ENGINE HAS CAUSED MORE DAMAGE THAN THE VIRUS THAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO DETECT AND DESTROY?... HUMMM... I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO DO FROM NOW ON...
