"SOLUTION:
The issue has been solved by the update from March 2nd, 2005 - 15.00 (GMT). We recommend you:
1. Disable BitDefender engine from GFI.
2. Update GFI.
3. Enable BitDefender engine."

All very well, except you cannot update the engine when it is disabled.

I have visited the KB article and it says that you must reboot the machine. If you update the files but do not reboot, the problem still exists

Hi all,

To regain full functionality of the BitDefender engine, please perform the following

1. Disable BitDefender engine from GFI MailSecurity configuration.
2. Reboot the machine
3. Enable BitDefender engine.
4. Perform a manual update of the BitDefender engine from the GFI MailSecurity configuration

on the other hand, to update you must disable the scan inbound e-mails and scan outbound e-mails on the properties of bitdefender. This way you may have the engine running but will not scan any e-mail, and you will be able to update the engine. Nonetheless, you must reboot the machine... do that people know what means to stop a mail server on working hours???!

How about a little change control? Like maybe testing updates prior to release?

My clients are not happy, but the customers whose Exchange store hit the limit because of this 'runaway' will be screaming.

Mistakes happen, but even minimal testing or validation would have caught this one. I hope management makes plans for something more than "oops, we're sorry".

I have manually updated a few times already but to no avail.

Why is it that BitDefender has a KB article but GFI does not? What is the point of an RSS feed for news that is over a month old already?

Reboot my production server! It's the middle of the work day.
Looks like another late night for me [Mad]

OK, does GFI have any clue the types of systems that their customers use? Rebooting major email servers is NOT a preferred daytime activity, much less having to restart services every time one of their programs are buggy.

I'd suggest a major review of their software processes, starting with error handling and prevention.

This fiasco is going to hurt GFI way more than it hurt my firm today, and that is unfortunate.

Putting aside the issue of rebooting a production server in the middle of the work day, did this procedure work for anyone? We're about to try it now.

Rebooted my gateway server, still no update. How about a manually applied (and tested) patch. The manual update button is not doing a thing and I really don't feel like waiting hour after hour to see if the update has come down yet.

Why does the server have to be rebooted? How can you tell if the update that fixes this really happens. I checked the logs and it never shows updates. Doing manually doesn't send the notification email. I think GFI needs to come out with a minimally invasive set of directions to correct this problem. Rebooting a server is not one of them.

Why in the world would you need to reboot the server to receive new definitions? You don't have to reboot every other time you get new ones.

Hi again,

If it is impossible to reboot the machine, please perform the following:

If MailSecurity is installed in VSAPI mode, restart the Microsoft Exchange Information Store.

If MailSecurity is installed in non-VSAPI mode, restart IIS Admin service.
