Where the heck did my last post go!??? It was there a few minutes ago! Is GFI now removing posts from this thread???

Once again, this is a MAJOR disaster that GFI should have caught. Obviously there is ZERO testing done on new virus defs or this would have been easily caught.

We have not even started to see the consequences of this disaster yet. GFI basically just deleted THOUSANDS of emails world wide! The loss of business and confusion from this event will be very serious.

We should at the very least be offered MAJOR discounts on the other engines like Kaspersky and McAfee.

Right now I am seriously considering other products. Not only because of the magnitude of this problem but because of the lack of notification and updated info to customers.

Having looked into this a bit more I notice that my "Decompression Engine" settings are set to only quarantine corrupted archives, so as this problem caused all emails to be wrongly detected as corrupted zip file, they should have been quarantined, not deleted?

Same issue here.

Disabling BitDefender leaves me with Norman. The whole point of having two engines was to catch something the other missed and the reason I chose MS.

edit: Disabling the engine stopped it. What a waste of time having to go through each corrupted notice and approve it. Some *are* legitimate viruses, which makes it more tedious

Hi Bill,

We have just discovered an issue in the latest BitDefender definition engine which is included in GFI MailSecurity where it is wrongly detecting all emails as corrupted zip file. We strongly suggest that you disable totally the BitDefender engine from configuration.

We are looking into this issue and we would like to apologize for the inconvenience caused.

Please note that new definition files have been uploaded on the update servers which do not have this problem.

regards,

David Vella - GFI Software Ltd. - www.gfi.com

The problem with these instructions though is that when you disable the engine, you can't update it. I turned the engine back on but disabled it from scanning inbound or outbound mail, and everything is going ok so far. However there is no sign of these new update files. Whenever I try ti update it tells me I have the most current files.

Wouldn't you think GFI would have the ability to force a push install to upgrade or even downgrade to the last known good DAT file? I just recieved an e-mail from GFI confirming the issue I reported over an hour ago (within 10 minutes of the update) and all the e-mail suggested was to completely disable BitDefender?!? Well how are the customers that still have BitDefender enabled going to receive that e-mail?!?

We are a global company with a large user base in the Far East and Asia; imagine if this problem had happened at 1AM, when our sysadmins were in bed.....ouch!

Here's an email from my GFI support rep:
There is a known issue from today at 8:45am EST with the BitDefender Engine. The last set of BitDefender updates is catching everything.
You need to disable the BitDefener Engine immediately especially if the Action is set to delete

To disable the BitDefender Engine - go into the configuration, right click on BitDefender and select Disable.

It is also recommended that you set the automatic updates to 1 hour.
This is done by going into the properties of the BitDefender Engine and going to the Updates Tab, and then select 1 hour.

Lastly, restart your GFI and IIS services for the changes to take effect.

Right click My Computer and select Manage Select Services and Applications Select Services Right Click the GFI Security Attendant and Select Restart Right click IIS Admin and select Restart

The Tech Support lines are currently busy dealing with this same issue.
In order to be notified when the issue is resolved you will need to sign up for MailSecurity notifications at http://www.gfi.com/pages/productmailing.htm if you haven't already done so already.

I have disabled in/out bound scanning and no new virus defs have been downloaded.

Working for a software developement firm I understand that there will always be bugs, but one as blatantly obvious as this one should have been caught with the most basic of tests. Tests which obvioulsy where not done.

Where does the blame lie? Well, IMO, with both BD and GFI.

I wonder if anyone at either firm realizes the magnitude of this blunder.

I got the message from GFI too, but it came through as:
Dear Recipient,

This mail has been deleted because a part of it (body or attachment) violated GFI Content Security's security policy.

That mail has been deleted by the GFI Content Security BitDefender Engine Module.

Regards,

GFI Content Security

At least it caused me to come here.

BTW you know what else is sad, they have RSS feeds for all their products with the latest news on them.

http://www.gfi.com/pages/productmailing.htm

The RSS feed for MailSecurity makes no mention of this error, and what good is a mail warning when all mail is being tagged?

I am not receiving the updated files. I have BitDefender enabled but not scanning any messages.

When I try to update it does not find a newer version.
