Yes, you are correct. Installing Outlook on the same machine as Exchange will corrupt MAPI. However un-installing Outlook is not enough to resolve the issue. We are checking further about this.

Looking on the Microsoft Newsgroups it seems that one way is to re-install Exchange on top of itself to get the correct Mapi.

Can you please search for any files whose name starts with 'mapistub' on your machines?
Please inform us of the file-extension of this file, and its location.

I'm having the exact same issue but using Exchange 2000/Faxmaker 10 (Outlook is not installed) and I have tried the instructions above.
I found a file c:\winnt\system32\mapistub.dll
In my Event Log there is a entry from Faxmaker when I try to start the Exchange Connector service:
ID 2, Unable to log on MAPI session

I am having ths problem also. Outlook has NEVER been installed on this exchange server. I tried the above but still no luck. Anyone else found a solution to this yet? After I did the 7 step method about I can get the service to start, however it will stop itself in about 2 or 3 seconds. I have not tried the fixmapi.exe, as stated earlier I did not have Outlook loaded on this machine, should I go ahead and run the fixmapi.exe file? I don't want it to mess up the MAPI so it effects exchange. [ March 17, 2004, 05:47 PM: Message edited by: Judd Myers ]

As stated, I had this problem also. I have gotten it fixed now. I went in to uninstall the program. There it will give you the option to repair it, I chose to give that a try and it fixed it. Just thought some of you might want to give it a try, if you haven't already.

I have also had the same problem... after 2 days of working via email with tech support I was refered to microsoft. I almost believe that this is becoming not just a MAPI problem but a Schema problem also.... as if there is a bad password hash for the MAPI logon.
Anyway: I have removed the faxmaker connector more than 6 times in the past 24 hours.rebooted the mail server numerous times and I still cannot get the faxmaker connector started, and the Faxmaker:i386 mailbox is not there... which they said it will not be until the faxmaker service starts. back to MAPI issues.... I found a MS kbase article stating that the 9175 MAPI error listed in the event log was a know issue with Exchange... Their answer was to make sure the information store was running... since I could see my on server mail I would say that it has to be. (MS kbase article 262456) Although I did get the service started now... I still cannot send a fax... after I send the fax there is no undeliverable, and no fax in the queue... Since this is a spit server install I stopped all the services on both machines to see if I could track the test fax.... I sent a fax, using exchange sys mgr I verified it in the queue. after I started the faxmaker connector on the exchange server the fax disappeared.

Logon Failure on database "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store (EXCH01)" - Windows 2000 account IRBINFO\Administrator; mailbox /o=IRBINFO/ou=first administrative group/cn=Configuration/cn=Connections/cn=FAXmaker:i386 (EXCH01). Error: 1010
I had the same error and I corrected it by giving read permissions to "all users" in the "First Storage Group\Mailbox Store", not in any mailbox itself.
good luck

nine,
you should check the FAXmaker connector properties. You should check the path to the IN and the OUT directories. These should point to the <FAXmaker\in> and <FAXmaker\out> directories on the Exchange server machine. The FAXmaker directory on the Exchange server machine should be shared and accessable by the logon account used for the FAXmaker Server service.
Can you check if there are any files in the IN or the OUT directories that are specified in the FAXmaker connector properties?

lamo_nepalskoe,
Is Outlook installed on the Exchange machine as well? Or was it installed previously?
Did you upgrade Exchange from a previous version?

lamo_nepalskoe,
If the problem is still occurring, can you send us your troubleshooting files to support@gfi.com. We would need to check further why the problem still persists in your case.
Can you also send us some logging from your Event Viewer. To do this:
i. Open your Event Viewer. ii. Select Application Log and click File -> "Save Log File As..." iii. Save the log file to the desktop in evt format. iv. Do the same for the System Log, zip up and send me both log files.
