JeffH -> Pop2Exchange - Connection timed out (3.Dec.2004 6:51:00 AM)

I am repeatedly getting failures as shown below

Connection timed out while working with mailbox XXXX on server aaa.bbb.ie.

The failures are not consistent. It will generally connect succesfully to less than half the thirteen accounts. I have dropped the frequency of connection to 15 minutes. I have tried resetting passwords at both the client and server.
Has anyone any suggestions?

Hi,

We would require some debug logging from MailEssentials. Can you please perform the following:

a) Stop all the MailEssentials services and the IIS admin service, taking note of the dependencies that are stopped.

b) Open Regedit (Start -> Run -> Type 'regedit' and press Enter)

c) Browse to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GFI\ME10\Config]

d) Change the 'debug' dword value from '0' to '1'

e) Browse to [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GFI\ME10\POP2Exchange]

f) Change the 'debug' dword value from '7' to '8'

g) Restart the services stopped in (a)

h) Reproduce the problem.

i) If the problem persists, send me a set of trouble shooter files to support@gfi.com for investigation.

Hi JH,

are most of your accounts hosted on aaa.bbb.ie?
If yes it might be that aaa.bbb.ie allows only
x connections per hour from one IP. Mail hoster like gmx.net do that for example.
If that is the case you might check if your mailhoster supports catchall mailboxes. That
would solve your problem.

Kind Regards
Stefan Engelbert

I have the same problem and have found it is usually some spam that will not download. I have to stop the service, logon on to webmail, and delete the mail that is causing the problem.

JeffH -> RE: Pop2Exchange - Connection timed out (3.Dec.2004 11:08:00 AM)

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try them and see what happens.

There is a catchall address, so there is scope to try that. The problem arises even when the mailbox is empty, so SPAM emails are not the issue here.

For further information this worked for several weeks before this problem arose. I am using ME9.

Thanks,

JH

Hi,

It would be helpful if before deleting the mail you could forward a copy over to us to allow us to investigate the issue further.

woodyz -> RE: Pop2Exchange - Connection timed out (3.Dec.2004 12:57:00 PM)

I sent you two copies of example mail that caused it to hang.

woodyz -> RE: Pop2Exchange - Connection timed out (3.Dec.2004 1:41:00 PM)

Figured it out. Was not the spam message that caused the hangup. Your product works. I have TrendMicro pop3trap run the mail before turning over to GFI. Those mails hung up the pop3trap making ME timeout.
Only happened on certain ones.
I guess I'm going to have to test out your Mail Security product and see how well it works.

Thanks
Woodyz

woodyz,

Thanks for the update!

JeffH -> RE: Pop2Exchange - Connection timed out (7.Dec.2004 6:01:00 AM)

Patrizia,

I have created the troubleshooting files which zips to 48MB. The troubleshooter utility suggests that files larger than 7MB should be ftp'd. Unfortunately I could not get the file to upload either using explorer or the command line FTP utility although there was no difficulty logging on in either case.

By the way, I noticed a timeout parameter in the registry settings set to 180. I presume these are seconds. The ISP suggested increasing the timeout for the login. Although three minutes seems generous by any standards, is this the place to make such a change?

Note I am using me9. I could not find the debug parameter you mentioned in your suggestion earlier.

Update: We have a maintenance agreement, so I gather we can upgrade to ME10. What is the recommended method to upgrade?

Regards,
JH

Patrizia,

I have upgraded to ME10.1 and the problem persists. I have created a set of troubleshooter files and FTP'd them up to the FTP site. Since installing 10.1 I cannot get to the properties dialog in POP2 Exchange, and the registry setting in step e) and f) did not exist, so I created it.

I will send you the details of the upload privately.

JH

Me too !!! I think my problem is in the pop3s connection: I must download from a pop3s server, i.e. with 995 tcp port. Can you help me? Do you know any solution ? I'm using ME 14 build 20081024.
Thanks

Use a 3rd-party app like PVE Collector.
