tyldums, It is best to send troubleshooter files to forums@gfi.com. This will enable us to find out what is causing Your issue.

Generate a set of troubleshooter files by running the GFI NSM Troubleshooter utility. It will create some files in a subfolder (the program mentions this as well) that you have to zip (winzip) to one file, and email gfi's support address this file. Just run the troubleshooter utility (found in Start Menu) and you'll see what i mean. Léon

tyldums, It appears that the issue was resolved for a certain period and you are encountering this issue again. We will be contacting you back on the support case you had opened previously.

I had the same problem for months: every morning the service NSM-engine was stopped, or it was hanging (trying to restart the service gives "no reaction" - it needs a server restart every morning). The german GFI support tries to help since 2 months or so ... without any needful result. I had no virus scanner on my server. Now the nsm-engine keeps running since 1 week without any problem. The thing I changed: I stopped the NSM monitor (which was running all the time before) on my server. Maybe a running NSM monitor causes all the problems? Any comments to that?

I too have have similar problems running NSM7 (I've had various similar problems since NSM 6). I am also running on Windows 2003 sp1. I've tried a second server with the same results. I've been emailing with support, sent troubleshooter files but have recieved no feedback since (a week or so ago). When I start the service it seems to run one round of monitors, sends alerts and then goes into never never land. In my case service doesn't stop, in fact I CAN'T stop it, it gives Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start ro control requies in a timely fashion. The only way to stop it is to kill the process through task manager. I've even tried unregistering and reregistering the service which doesn't seem to help. I am logging activity to a file and it basically shows a that activity just stops yet the service is running (or appears to be in the service manager). I cannot continually restart (or kill) the service so the software is essentially useless to me at this point.

I discovered that in my case, nsm_engine.exe would crash due to a McAfee dll attempting to access it. The McAfee dll in question is 'mytilus.dll', which was updated in patch 11 to fix a memory leak with it. Installing Patch 11 for VirusScan 8.0 Enterprise has resolved the NSM service crash issue for me.

Sorry - I spoke too soon... The service crashed again this morning. At least I now know it's a McAfee related issue. Unfortunately I can't be sure if it's GFI's code or McAfee's that is at fault! GFI team - will you take responsibility for investigating this conflict with McAfee? Hi, Does your McAfee product require the patch mentioned at: http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=54876 It solves the following issue: 5. ISSUE: PatchLink, a third-party application, will crash when the Script Scan module is installed. BZ242659, BZ237574 RESOLUTION: Updates made to the Script Scan module, SCRIPTPROXY.DLL, and a shared scanner module, MYTILUS.DLL, resolve the issue. Thank you.

I appologise for that - I missed your first point. However, I would recommend that you contact McAfee about this issue, since it seems they already had similiar problems before. (we would not have any type of contract with McAfee). You may want to send us a copy of your troubleshooting files, so we can try identifying where Network Server Monitor is stopping. Thank you.
