We have been running Running Network Monitor (v5) for several months now without problem. However, over the last few days, we have noticed a lack of alerts from the system.
Investigation showed that the Network Server Monitor Service had stopped. Restarting it, causes it to run again for a few seconds before it stops again.
I have upgraded to NSM 5.5 and the problem still exists..
Any ideas?

We had the same problem! I debugged and analyzed the problem, because we didn't get a solution from support - it was a kind of try and error ;-).
But first check if have a virus scanner installed and not excluded all directories. If this is fine and you have still the problem...
So well what to do? Or where is the problem:
The reason for stopping is a an internal error in the service when it is loaded in the memory and running rules for browsing the event log for errors e.g. the combination of the provided wmi script for checking event logs and the service made the problem at our site.
We have now excluded this kind of rules and everything is working fine.
At the moment I am testing other scripts for getting event log infos.
I posted this error to the support but didn't get any "thank you".
Well that's bad, but help yourself!
;-)
Kind regards,
Steffen

Thanks. Thats sorted it.
For Info, McAfee Virus Scan 8 blocks outbound connections on port 25, so we needed to disable that rule in the Virus Scanner to allow notifications to work again...

Hi.
FYI: I had the same problem. What seemed to help me was to put all of the rules on hold and then start the service. Once I verified that the service stayed running, I re-enabled all of the rules, although not all at once.
I wonder if it was getting overloaded, but was not able to handle the error gracefully?
Also, this is what was being logged in my servers System log:
Event Type: Error Event Source: Service Control Manager Event Category: None Event ID: 7031 Date: 11/10/2004 Time: 11:28:50 AM User: N/A Computer: DSSSMUS1 Description: The GFI Network Server Monitor service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 3 time(s). The following corrective action will be taken in 0 milliseconds: No action.

Hi Claude,
The error that you have encountered seems different then the one referenced in this post. Also, it may require some ammount of troubleshooting from our side. Can you please send us your troubleshooting files at support@gfi.com?
Thank you.

As FYI. McAfee Virus Scan 8.0 Enterprise (and maybe other 8.0 versions) with crash many things due to memory leaks (due to not cleaning up remote connections). There are at least 8 patches not referenced in the release notes. Our DC's, file servers, and GFI server crashed. GFI still won't run properly with 8.0 so we went back to 7.1. We will be testing excluding certain folders to see if we can get back to 8.0.

I'm also running VirusScan 8 Enterprise and I've found that allowing TCP 25 Outbound and not scanning '..Program Files\GFI\Network Server Monitor\' was required to recover from the NSM service crashing situation.
Additionally I was only able to restart the services 1 by 1 using the 'Hold' feature on all instances first. Trying to start all in one go caused the service to stop again. I'm only currently monitoring 15 items... [ November 15, 2004, 12:25 PM: Message edited by: j823777 ]

Hi, We also have the NSM service problem. When we try to start the NSM service (or after a reboot) it stops immediately. The only way to start the service is to set 4 specific rules on hold status, start the NSM service and then bring the ōhold-rulesö successively online. The 4 rules are all original GFI vbscript-rules (CheckExchange and CheckProcess). The other 30 rules cause no such problems. We also use VirusScan 8.0 but the problem still occurs when VirusScan 8.0 is disabled.
Thanks, Rainer

I would be happy to provide any data GFI require to get this resolved. My NSM service stopped again today for no apparent reason.
We have just started to rely on NSM to let us know how our network was performing and to give us a head-start on any potential problems. This bug means we cannot trust that NSM itself is working, and the whole point of the product is lost.
Maybe GFI could extend the license to cover 2 GFI servers? That way they could monitor each other =/
I have purchased maintenance on NSM so I will raise this via official channels too.

Currently we are still investigating what may be the cause of such failures.
As has been mentioned above, virus scanners do tend to cause such issues, since they will deny GFI Network Server Monitor access to certian files (e.g. the configuration files or the vbscript files). Therefore it is recommended to disable virus scanning software from scanning the GFI Network Server Monitor directory.
Should the problem persist, please contact us at support@gfi.com, so we can proceed with troubleshooting further.

I think the virus scanner is not the reason for these problems, because we excluded the GFI folder and the problem still exists. After that we disabled the virus scanner and the problem is the same.

Such scanning software will deny Network Server Monitor exclusive access to certain files. This may cause unpredictable results.

I have exactly the same problem, and stopping Mcafee did not help. Have GFI come up with an answer?
