billybarty -> Scan hangs since upgrade to NSS 6 (16.Mar.2005 12:17:00 PM)

I upgraded to NSS 6 last week and since then about half of the time when I run a scan on a segment the scan will hang after a few dozen systems and will not complete. Task manager shows NSS as running but nothing happens.

Sorin Coroian -> RE: Scan hangs since upgrade to NSS 6 (21.Mar.2005 3:52:00 AM)

On what portion of the scan does it hang? Does the scan stop when collecting OS Data, at patch scanning or when checking vulnerabilities?

billybarty -> RE: Scan hangs since upgrade to NSS 6 (21.Mar.2005 10:25:00 AM)

The progress indicator says " checking if IP .... is turned on"

billybarty -> RE: Scan hangs since upgrade to NSS 6 (21.Mar.2005 10:42:00 AM)

The IP that it is checking to see if it is turned on is .254, the end of the IP subnet range that I specified if it helps.

But what happens on scan threads? Usually the discovery threads is finished between them and progress indicator show the last operation on it.

Do you have antivirus installed on LNSS host or scanned computers? What was the scan time for other computers? What about connection bandwith?

We are investigated a similar issue and aditional information would be useful. So, if you want please send me the logs.

The procedure for getting detailed logs:
- locate this key : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\GFI\LNSS5\Config
and set debug value to 1
- restart the application and regenerate the problem
- use the troubleshooter to collect logs and machine info
- archive the generate files and send to sorin@gfitemasoft.com
Or you can send only log.csv from debuglogs folder

I have zipped the files and sent them to you. The clients do have antivirus installed but they did when LNSS 5 was installed. No network changes have been made and I am unsure of the available bandwidth.
I noticed in the program files folders there is still a folder structure there for LNSS 5, could that be part of the problem?

Any luck with this issue?

Sorin Coroian -> RE: Scan hangs since upgrade to NSS 6 (29.Mar.2005 2:30:00 AM)

In this case could be a database corruption (was suggested to change database with a new one) but I sent also an updated file, I am waiting for a confirmation.
Do you have a similar problem?

mac1988 -> RE: Scan hangs since upgrade to NSS 6 (30.Mar.2005 3:22:00 PM)

Greetings

I am using the trial version of NSS 6 and get "checking if IP ... is turned on".

I can duplicate this everytime. All I do is run a ping scan on a range 192.168.1.2 - 192.168.1.25. For this range, the progress is reported as Overall Progress 14/15. All three scanning threads seem to have completed. The Stop option is availabe. If i hit stop, nohting happens (except the pop-up) and I have to eventually kill the program.

It stops at the last IP every time. Even if I change the range, it stops at the last IP.

Any suggestions?

Are you saying that we cannot have anti-virus on our hosts or our client computers? That this will slow us down? This is what is happening to my scans, they take about 3-4 hours for 200 machines, and that is on the Missing patches only scan option, I also have turned off everything I can think of in the options to speed this up. That is way too long.

xnih -> RE: Scan hangs since upgrade to NSS 6 (15.Apr.2005 10:25:00 AM)

not sure on a time issue that it would cause (it being AV software), but it makes sense that it would slow things done a bit (now is that a few milliseconds or 100 MS, or 1000 ms...).

Every file you touch, to check version info, the AV software, on the client machine, is going to start to scan it and check it.

It would be an interesting test to do a scan of a remote machine, full scan, and see the difference in time with AV on it and w/o. Not that in this day and age going w/o AV software is very practical, but would be an interesting case study. Maybe I'll play with that one of these days if I have time.

I can scan machines on my local LAN great, but over the WAN, it sucks. The scheduled scan helps since it always stalls out after only a few machines when I try to scan a bunch of machines that are not at my physical location.

I am having the same problem. Running lnss 6 and scan hangs before it is complete even over the LAN, but over the WAN is much worse.
