Eric,
I did a scan of a couple ranges, one of our DHCP scopes and antoher static IP range and they both finished fine. This of course only complicates the scenario. Both of the ranges had about 1500 nodes.

haha, not a clue anymore [Frown]

Umm, this is all just on the intial scan... hmm, got me overall. I know a new build is due out (hopefully a little over a week from now), it deals with patching multiple systems, don't know that it deals with any of these issues mentioned in this thread, but I'd like to wait and see if it helps/hinders etc, before I try to wrap my mind back around this issue!

new build has been out since the 5th, so you tell me, anything new with the new build? As far as I know your issue was not looked into specifically on this, but there have been quite a few updates behind the scenes, one may be what is needed for your issue.

Just scanning back through this I remember issues in old (prior 2.0) versions where it would lock up due to certain types of packets or hangs in the background.

On times/scans where it has hung up, have you ever got successful scans of those? I'll try to go back through this whole thread and see if I can come up with any other ideas. But right now it seems it may have to do with responses from certain machines.

Eric,
I think I may have resolved this issue! While doing some research and a kicking off a scan for machines missing MS03-026 I opened up task manager to see what the CPU and memory were at when the scan stopped. I noticed that my dual processor system appeared as a quad processor because hyper threading was enabled.

I recalled an aritlce I read about hyper threading actually causing problems in some applications, as in actually slowing the application down. It doesn't take a great leap to think that if it can cause an app to slow down it could hang the scan either. So I rebooted went into the BIOS and disabled hyper threading.

Yesterday I did a scan of about 100 hosts by name and it complted the entire scan. Today I am working on a 400 host list that is at 5% and still running.

Before this would have never completed, or even got to 1% so it is looking very hoopeful.

I spoke too soon!

It has frozen again, the wierd thing is that in taks manager it does not say that it is no longer responding, it does not error out and create a dump file, it just sits there....

can't recall if it was this thread or another (too lazy to read through all 35 messages here right now), BUT, there are a few threads on multiprocessors in general and it seems that they were causing problems. Nothing I was ever able to duplicate or anyone on the test team since none of us have any multiprocessor boxes. So SMP (that the correct acronym? long day, brain fried) could be an issue from other peoples posts.

1. where in the scan has it hung? List Processes, List Users, etc.

2. What version are you currently running? Help > version Info for exact build (3.3 July 16 2003 is the latest build)

let me know, we can take a bit more of a look at this.

eric

ps, thanks for updating the same thread saves me some headache!

It hangs at a different point, yesterday it got 12% through 400 host scan and hung chekcing for a missing MS patch, other times it gets hung on ping sweeps, etc.

It's version 3.3.

unfortunetly, it could be the multi processor, like I said in the last post, others seem to have run into issues with multiprocessor machines. I can't verify it one way or the other. Would recommend at least for a test to install on a single processor machine and run a full scan, see if you can get it to hang then also.

Also, check your exact build if you would. I assume it is the latest, but just want to be sure.

arrgghhh, ok, lets go back to the basics, what is different about your machines/setup than everywhere else [Smile]

We'll go with the latest machine, single processor:

1. What OS, what SP
2. Who are you logged on as
3. What other software is installed
4. Network topology (lan, wan, 10, 100, 1 gig, cheap switches, wierd routers, etc).
5. How big of a scan again (I know it is up higher, but want to start fresh)
6. What part did it lock on (different every time? checking for patches, checking for user, shares, etc)
7. AntiVirus software installed (back to #3)
8. Other client software installed (back to #3)
9. RAM showed being used
10. anything else I'm forgetting.
