The file that that generates is located in the Languard Network Scanner 3 directory
You can open it up and modify it if you need to or save for smaller scans.
When done this way it intially does this: quote: Resolving TS115-ACT07 Resolved as : x.x.216.98 Resolving YOUR-SE43XSM15F Resolved as : x.x.218.86 NETBIOS discovery ... Reply from x.x.215.79 ( AKAUS ) Reply from x.x.215.26 ( 104986 ) Reply from x.x.208.75 ( 94993 ) Reply from x.x.218.128 ( 96241 )
to convert from netbios (or dns) names to IP addresses.
1. I still recommend going to a cmd prompt and doing a netstat -an and see how many are still listening, it could be we are running out of stack space, but you aren't seeing that error, so it may not be.
2. do a ctrl-alt-del and tell me how much memory LNSS is using when it freezes.
3. again, how far into the file is the machine that it locks up on, it might not be the same machine, but it could be a specific number in each time, say computer 300, and since you are running the scan again, with a new list created on the fly it appears to be a different machine, but in fact is the machine in the list at a specific place.
4. The first scan that worked, did you do it exactly the same way, through the pick computers option on a new scan?
5. Is a LNSS_Debug.log file generated?
The Dr. Watson log doesn't mean anything to me (might mean more to the programmer), but most likely it is memory address on your local machine and not something he can use. If the LNSS_debug.log file is generated it provides him with more info.

I sent a screen shot via email of the command window.
Languard.exe is using 18,040K and 50% of the CPU.
This time i locked up at the sixth computer, still in the A's so it is not locking up at the same number of systems.
Yes the first time that it worked I have tried running the scan with the same configuration and it still locks up. I have actually been able to run a scan of the domain twice successfully. Once with my own scan configuration.
It does not appear to be creating a new debug log file. I renamed the old one and initated a new scna to see if it creates one.

Ok, have sent on bits and pieces of this already to the development/test team, but will generate a ticket on it and see if anyone else has any ideas or can duplicate it.

another question though, you said you are running 2000 adv server, what else is running on this machine though? Are you remote controlled into something or some wierd windows program, just looking at the pics you have sent and looks like some theme manager is running?
Granted this could be that you are running the scan via Terminal services.
Also, the latest pic you sent you did a nbtstat -an , need netstat -an

The only other program that would be running is NAV and I did not install it until yesterday. The view you are seeing is through my XP desktop using remote desktop connection to the server in the server room.
I sent you another email with the results of a netstat.

Ok, will check it out, put in a trouble ticket for tracking purposes with the rest of the development team. Will see if they have any ideas.

Sorry for the long delay, your message got tagged as potential spam, and I had to dig around to find it. Anyway with the netstat -a that you sent me, you currently had just over 2000 ports listening, so it could be an issue with stack space.
next section added in edit: You also had another approx. 1400 established or listening ports.... end edit (fyi)
I requested the ability, in a new version, to limit the number of threads that are going at any one point in time, haven't heard back on that yet, and probably won't until it is implemented (if it is implemented).
On one scan you said it locked up on the 6th computer, if you can get it to lockup on an early scan again you may want to do the netstat -a again and see how many listening ports you have.
I don't know if this is an issue with LNSS or specific network card/drivers that you are using, that ports do not seem to be closing.
Will keep you posted if anyone is able to reproduce the issue or we figure anything out.

Just posted that info earlier today and emailed off to the programmer on it (he is over in Europe, so probably missed him today, and he is normally a bit slow on responses due to large numbers of emails, so I don't expect anything for a day or two).

I too am having this hanging process problem. I have to kill the process. I have been able to save the scan up to that point so I did not lose any current info. This hangs on the "SMB probe 1/6". Just found this thread so have not done all the look up mentioned. I am working from a specific list of IPs about 8300 long. I have a Win2K build 2195 SP3 Mem 524M. Interested to see where this goes.

There is a good chance it has to do with the a memory issue in LNSS with the large size of the list you have. There are a few other threads that have been started on that issue in the past. They are looking into it on the list length issue.
I know from previous experience that anything over about 2000 entries to be actually scanned causes problems.
As for the hanging you are seeing on the 1/6 area, please provide a bit more info on it, either in this thread or start another one specific to that (since this thread is already quite long).

nope, they are working on lots of bug fixes and whatnot, haven't heard anything specific on this or other issues.
Though you did mention that this is on a dual processor machine, if you get a chance, install it on another machine in your facility without dual processors in it. Someone else in another thread in the past few weeks has mentioned issues they were having on a dual processor machine. I don't have any dual proc machines here that I can test on, neither did the main tester I got ahold of, the programmer thought he had access to one or two. That was at the beginning of this week, haven't heard anything on that either.
Will email him on it and see if he was able to test/verify the issue.

Tried it on a single processor system and had similar results. It got further but still locked up.

ok, thanks for the update. talked to one of the admins where I work, he said I could test on his dual proc machine, but if you are having the same issue with a single, might not be worth my time.
could be an issue with using the list, don't know, if possible I'd recommend doing a class c based subnet scan. Don't know if it is something specific to your location (specific switches) or what. I personally can't reproduce the issue in my tests so far.
The testers were working on testing an issue with list scans, but not sure that it was related to this issue.
