Interesting, I've recieved other emails in regards to this also.

As for old patches, I'll mention more in the paragraph below, but "most" should not install, unless they are for the same SP, then again, even patches from 98 could be for SP6 on NT4, that SP has been out for awhile now and the product is at the end of its life cycle with Microsoft here in just a bit. Not to say that it isn't running everywhere still. I know of many people still running it in my work area. Anyway, if the patch has been superceded because of an SP it normally won't install. If it is an early one, that another patch fixed (patches for patches, got to love that idea) then yeah, there is the possiblity it could break the fix, but in theory, LNSS should then note that the next one in line should be installed.

Anyway, it would have been interesting to see why LNSS was reporting that specific patches were missing (registry settings, file version, etc), in scans of NT 4 and other OS's I have not seen it saying old patches needed installed, except in the case where we are having problems with the notes feature (if you turn it off patches that don't need installed get reported as needing installed, so leave the feature enabled until the next version). But I've mentioned that in another thread.

On my home machine, even MS's autoupdate feature can't get it right. I was up to date on everything and then the patch of 2 or 3 days ago came out, then my box said that it was missing a patch from back on Feb 18 or so, which had been installed back then. So just FYI, even MS can't get it write 100% of the time with their own stuff! Which I find quite humorous.

Also, last I heard (2 days ago) we are still supporting patching on NT4, but not running of the product from an NT4 machine. XP or 2000 only for running scans from.

Even from what you posted (which I have removed):

quote:
Unfortunately GFI is no longer supporting LANguard N.S.S. on Windows NT. If you want to continue using LANguard N.S.S. you need to get your operating system current.
From other emails I believe this was in regards to running it from a NT4 box, not scanning of an NT box, as I mentioned above.

Anyway, we are continueing to improve the product and hopefully some of these issues have been taken care of.

Considering that the information you removed came from a GFI director, I think you are to be commended for handling the difficult task you've been assigned, Eric.

Thanks again for trying.

Best regards,

Tom
