Version 21.1 coming - Tuesday, October 24, 2017 7:24 PM
I've had a trouble ticket open now for over a week due to version 21 upgrade problems. Like everyone else, the AS module drops out frequently leaving us completely unprotected. Anyway, I got notice in my trouble ticket that version 21.1 is in testing and will release soon. Here's the quotes

Thank you for contacting GFI Support. It was confirmed to be a bug in version 21, causing this and developers team is working on the solution.  I\ll inform you in this ticket as sun the working solution will be confirmed from them

to which I replied

I need some kind of ETA from you. I'm now being added to spam lists because Mailessentials 21 is failing and delivering back scatter, and because of this my users emails can longer reach their destinations. This is situation is NOT acceptable.

and received the response today:

We are in process of testing version 21.1 which suppose to fix all issues, and publicly available this week

So fingers crossed, our collective misery may soon be over.

Re:Version 21.1 coming - Friday, October 27, 2017 3:26 AM
I installed it about 30 mins ago and it installed successfully the second time. The first time it failed because the AV service failed to close. I suggest manually stopping all of the services before install. Install took about 20 mins.

I cant speak to long term stability yet obviously but 30mins in, it has not crashed and there is no failed mail. I can see directory harvesting working again in the logs which means it appears stable.

Don't want to be the first to yell,
but I tried to install it 2hrs ago and it always ended in an error. Logfile had nothing i can work with.
It seems services were stopped, the iis virtual directory was deleted and then the installer went through it's different stages but nothing really was done.
I the deinstalled Mailessentias 20 completely, restarted the server and ran the 20.1 installer again and what i saw was, that no files were copied to disk. I guess the error cam just before that step.
Tried it as "Administrator" and another admin account.

Installed 20.0 again without problems.

Very interested in how it went for you.

Well, this issue is about 21 and 21.1, not 20!

I'm sorry. I've been through a 3hr run to fix my ME again. I meant 21.

Tried to install 21.1, ended knees deep in shite, went back to 21.0.

I will let other brave souls try this and wait another few weeks.

Update: 1 week in, and it's been great. Not one crash. Good thing too because for the last 5 days the directory harvesting module has been working overtime. 3-5 times the normal incoming spam.

While I was extremely frustrated with GFI for their initial release and handling of 21.1 - and I feel rightfully so - I am happy once again. Normally I would not upgrade to a new version so quickly, but my renewal had just come up with the new virus engines so I HAD to update.

I'm still on 21.0 because 21.1 give an error at the end of the installation.
So I have lots of mail in FailedMails and crashes of GFIscans service.
Uninstallation and reinstallation of 21.1 fail, installation of 21.0 works but with same issues.
I am trying to restore a backup of 20.x until this version become stable.

Installed 21.1 last week without any issues. Version seems to work better but I still monitor crashes. Seems they are coming from the EmailSecurity part as the failed mails now are stored in \EmailSecurity\FailedMails and not in \AntiSpam\FailedMails.

There is an unreleased patch available as the scan engine crashes when empty attachments are processed. This patch resolved the current issue with ME 21.1.

GFI when is the official release on the patch
I do not want to upgrade until 21.1 works
Too many issues in the past.
You should not make your customer your beta testers.
release only when you have a working model.......
Still running
Version: 20.3 Build: 20170321 Have seen tooooooo many issues when you roll out in the past.
will not list them but you know what they are.
RESPECT (-:

Re:Version 21.1 coming - Monday, December 04, 2017 12:21 PM
Seems the patch is included in the official Patch 1 for ME 21.1 as the contcheck.dll from the unofficial patch has been updated with this patch.
Unfortunately since Patch 1 has been installed again a lot of mails get into the failed mails folder WTF??? This is really not acceptable anymore!!!

Edit: Seems it is only affecting outgoing mails. They seem to arrive at their destination but a copy is placed in the failed mails folder for whatever reason.

Re:Version 21.1 coming - Tuesday, December 05, 2017 5:37 AM
Just to let you know, I installed Patch 1 for MailEssentials 21.1 last Wednesday (29/Nov/17).
Everything running fine since then.
No more crashing scan engines.
No more failed mails in any 'FailedMails' folders.
Also fixed my Sophos License issue.
(Running on standalone server with Windows 2012 R2, as Smart/SMTP host. Exchange on separate server).
Hopefully we will have some stability for a while.
Kind regards
Stephen

Re:What was I thinking - Wednesday, December 06, 2017 10:00 AM
Hello,
me too. I have this with 3 or 4 installations I upgraded to 21.1 Build 20171027 (with the patch installed).
I have an open support call, but no result as of yet.

What I can say is that those mails are delivered to the recipient even though they are put in the FailedMails Folder.

And I noticed that in all 4 cases it happens at the same minute in different hours, e.g.:

Installation 1:  FailedMails at 08:59, 10:59, 01:59 ...
Installation 2: Failed Mails at 10:26, 12:26, 02:26 ...

I believe the minute could be related to the last time the services were restarted, but i don't know for sure.

Hi Dubindee
Hold off on the upgrade, just my experience
I thought that the patch would correct an ongoing issue.
But not.
I have been using GFI since 2005 and have droped several of their products due to issues and poor response to issues that have not been corrected.
I have opened a support case a few minutes ago

Hi,

I was given a private patch this morning, installed it on three servers and they are good now (6 hrs without failed Mails seems safe).

It was basically exchanging %CommonProgramFiles(x86)%\GFI\common\TextConvertersProxy.dll for a new version of the dll.

Refer to case #GFI-171204-521751 I am not sure if I am allowed to post the link to the patch here.

Greetings,
Tim
