You'd better do it as ISA rule, not GFI.

GFI WebMonitor can be designed to block Yahoo Messenger, when accessed via a website (Such as http://webmessenger.yahoo.com/) However, the product is not designed to block traffic on other ports or from applications outside of web browsers. This would need to be done from ISA. Also, there is no way to set 'time frame' blocking so that websites are blocked only during specific hours within our product.

There's no a predefined Yahoo Messenger protocol in the ISA 2004 (and 2006 too). You should create a rule to block HTTP and tcp/udp on port 5050 to servers scs.yahoo.com msg.edit.yahoo.com messenger.yahoo.com http.pager.yahoo.com *.msg.yahoo.com You'd better create a destination set for it, you know ;) I have no problems with Yahoo messenger so written above is just my suggestion. Please let me know if it helps.

To correct my last past, there is a way to configure the time based blocking within our application, however it would not block the messenger applications still. To block Yahoo Messenger maybe you want block outbound port TCP port 5050 on the ISA Server. You can also consider blocking it by using the application signature http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc302520.aspx on the ISA Server as well. Here is more info about yahoo ports and servers http://help.yahoo.com/l/in/yahoo/messenger/messenger8/messenger/messenger-02.html

DrewE, can WebMonitor break already established connections that no more fit to the policy according with time-based rules?

The question we really need to know is how does Yahoo Messenger connect to the server? Some servers simply send login credentials on port '80' then all further communication is done on a separate port. Please consider installing WireShark to perform network packet traces and find out what ports the Yahoo Messenger application is using.

Yahoo Messenger is a real pain, just like Skype. It uses port 5050, but if it's blocked messenger tries to find any allowed port, 80 for example, and uses it. The only way I know is to block Yahoo servers listed above. And it's not a complete list, I afraid...

I can block Yahoo Messenger in ISA and GFI Webmonitor. but problem is after the allowed time was out ISA or GFI Webmonitor did not cut the connection automatically. I set a policy in ISA and GFI Webmonitor allow 12-1 pm. after 1 pm ISA and GFI Webmonitor did not automatically disconnect the yahoo messenger. thanks! Norman
